The Mayan long count calendar is the one people say predicts the end of the world on December 12, 2012. Note that the Mayans had multiple calendars.
The long count calendar was divided into units of time called bak'tuns. A bak'tun is 394 years, and the calendar does indeed say the current 13th bak'tun ends on December 12, 2012.... But there is NOTHING to support the bullshit apocalypse theory. That theory came up in the mid 1980s, and historians have not found a SHRED of evidence to support that.
The only fucking thing that happens on December 12th is the beginning of the 14th bak'tun. That's all. It's like New Year's, only it just occurs once every 394 years. That's fucking all. The Mayan calendar is cyclic, it's a constant fucking cycle.

Every time I hear someone say 'Isn't the world gonna end in 2012?' I feel like grabbing their shoulders and shaking them. I fucking hate apocalypse scares, and anyone who buys into them is an idiot.
