Hi /sci/

I have the opportunity to get double-degrees (MSc in engineering/physics) with some universities :

>Columbia
>Georgia Tech
>UI Urbana-Champaign
>Imperial College
>University College
>KTH (Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden)
>EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland)

My question is how do they look. I am not talking about the quality of teaching or research, but about renown and repute.
For example I know Columbia is a good name in business, what about science ? (I come from France and this is very important here)

Is it hard to become a TA in the US ? (That tuition is not gonna pay itself).

Moreover I know the French education system (in science) is puzzling abroad and I would like to see to what extent. Do you know any educational structure, and what do you think about them (comparing to those precedently mentioned)

Thanks guys.

WTF AM I READING? Ohh, engineering. I see your fucking probelm. Drop that shit ASAP.

>> No.2968474

Georgia Tech is a great choice for engineering. Not sure about the other schools/majors.

From what i read in this board, there don't seem to be any cheap major in the US.

All Physics Masters programs fund there studnets 100%. No physicist ever pays for school for masters or Phd. That is the way the system is set up for physics studnets in the USA.

>double-degrees

It's one degree. In britain we call them single and joint honours.

>> No.2968536

columbia.

it's a respectable school regardless of what you major (actually, business is one of their worst programs, i chose nyu over it for my mba)

GA Tech. No, it's not hard to become a TA.

What I mean is by earning the MSc in one uni. i will get another one from my original school.

>>2968521
But you have to be a research assistant, don't you ?

>> No.2968577

>>2968551
Nope. Not for physics.

They usually just wave your tution, and give you automatic stipend, or just give you a job automatically, or somthing. In whatever case, you dont have to worry about money or tution, they take care of it all.

>> No.2968602

>>2968577
Just...why ? Why do they fund you like that ?

>> No.2968647

>>2968602

They don't

The person that said that is full of shit

you still pay for most masters degrees in physics and the people that have funding usually but not always are obligated to TA

see http://www.drexel.edu/physics/resources/graduate/prospective/ for proof

also columbia physics has no masters program he must be in the school of engineering with a certificat/dual degree thing THROUGH engineering see http://www.columbia.edu/cu/physics/grad/main/info/index.html

columbia engineering masters degrees are non-funded

Thanks all.

How do minors/supplementary courses usually work ?
Do you take whatever you want, does it have to be inthe same college/department, are there prerequisites ?

>> No.2968694

>>2968666

You are a grad student you do not have a minor.

Supplimentary courses outside of your program can be taken as an audit or if you apply for an advanced certificate in a different department. You will have to pay for whatever courses you take on a certificate/ unless for some reason they are dual listed as qualifying for your overall degree. Audited courses are free unless language or lab generally.

And how are these considered ?
Should I put them in my resumee or is it merely for culture ?

>> No.2969764

>>2968776

You are a grad student and no longer have a resume. You now have a CV. Look up their forms. But as someone who is brand new with no publication history. List relevant courses to your major or interest. For the courses you audit I would write it like this:

Fluid Dynamics
Advanced Circuits
Number Theory (Audit)
Scientific and Business Russian (Audit)

Georgia Tech is great for engineers, but expect a morose atmosphere.
