2931780 No.2931780 [Reply] [Original]

I posit that adding regular indents to a car would improve gas mileage, in the same way that indents on a golf ball allow it to travel farther than a smooth golf ball with the same energy imparted. It would create a turbulent boundary layer on the car, resulting in a narrower, low pressure wake and hence less pressure drag.

What do you think?

Why hasn't anyone done this yet?

I coulda swore I had a teacher talk about this, but the cars were so ugly looking that it didn't go anywhere

Golfballs are supposed to fly. Cars are not supposed to fly.

>> No.2931821

Because car wakes are minute to begin with, and this is by design. The wake of a ball can be many times the balls diameter, while the wake of a vehicle - or in a more abstract example, a NACA wing - is many times smaller than its length scale, as near the trailing edge the streamlines are 'pulled' together as it were. And so the drag reduction from the smaller wake would be vastly smaller than the drag increase from the turbulent flow in the dimples.

This is a bad answer.

But cars are designed for specific pressures to keep them on the road, wouldnt dimpled cars drive poorly

>> No.2931902

>>2931859
For most modern cars, lift becomes a concern at well above a hundred miles an hour. Before that, the weight of the vehicle is so much that lift is almost completely negligible. The foremost concern is drag, as the effects of fuel economy are readily measurable.

I also postulate to those who posted the Mythbusters video that the result would be substantially different with a subcompact than for a full-size sedan; a economy-focused vehicle has a very small wake to start with. The same reason a jet fighter isn't dimpled, it has a negligible wake too.

>> No.2931923

>>2931902
So we should dimple 18wheelers? As they have much wake.

more importantly, you know those hybrid cars that operate on gas an electricity? put a small turbine, say a foot and a half in diameter, horizontally on the top of the car

there are better ways to do it

honestly for anything that's not spherical there are better ways of preventing flow separation than dimpling.

I tjought turbine resistance would never be offset by electrical gain. Is why turboed cars get poor gasmileage when turbo is engaged

You don't even know what a turbo on a car is or what it does. Stop being 14.

The turbine takes energy to turn
It adds a drag force to the car

the extra energy needed to overcome the drag would be more than the energy you would get.

Dude like
wtf

I mean, that was probably some 100kg of clay on the car and it STILL performed better.

Moreover, the dimples weren't even designed or optimized, they were pretty much random.

I would call bullshit if there was a, say, 2% difference, but 11%, wtf.

>> No.2932058

they were comparing it to a car with smooth clay on it so the weight would be the same.

regardless, yes dimples work because they trip the boundary layer to be turbulent, so it's more resistant to separation. but there are better ways to do that on something that's not a sphere that tumbles end over end through the air.
