I'm sick of people telling me I'm smart, I'm fucking not. I hated maths all my life and although I show interest in science I have no fucking interest in learning 1359 formulas by heart to calculate useless shit.

Most of learning from elementary to college is 100% useless and is only learned to score good on tests. You can be totally uncreative and dumb, if you bluntly study long enough you'll score high enough. Asians who study 24/7 are a perfect example of this.

My GPA was probably sufficient (3.9)
But... I didn't study or really try on ACT/SAT. Got very mediocre scores.
Plus I didn't really try to apply to any Ivy's because I got accepted to the first uni I applied to anyways. I didn't really have any ideal universities in mind so I applied to the nearest one.
Also there's practically no way I could afford it. I have scholarships but they only apply to Florida universities (aka Bright Futures Scholarship) and I can go to college essentially for free because my scholarships pay for everything.

Variety of reasons, half because I'm lazy and half because it would be financially impractical.

Also, I make myself feel better by realizing that the valedictorian of my school went to the same university as me, so it can't be terrible. He was a seriously smart kid and he could have gone anywhere he wanted. Where you go for your undergrad doesn't matter nearly as much as what you do during your undergrad years. Going to an Ivy League school as an undergrad hardly means shit.

When you add it all up and consider the cost of a school like MIT is well over 30,000 dollars a year then it is not economically worth it unless you want to be a world leader like you said

With the amount of time it would take me to pay off of IVY league , not to mention the extra work required to get into these schools you could easily create a lot more connections then these schools could give you .

I honestly think I could have gotten in to one had I tried harder and basically had my life sorted out better in high school. Unfortunately I dealt with a lot of shit and slacked off and ended with like a 3.3 GPA. However I was an IB student (basically equivalent to all my classes being AP) and I think the stress of it threw me back.

Had I not been IB and taken normal classes and just a couple AP courses in what I was interested in I think my stress level would have been much lower, I would have been leading a much more fulfilled life, and I would have made better grades. All of these things would have gotten me into a much better school and basically just a much better future than what I have now. Plus no one ever knows wtf IB is anyway.

So kids, don't overload yourself with work and stress. That's not the way to get where you want to be.

Yup I've heard that too, I'm white myself but mostly of the ivy universities don't select so many foreign students except maybe for Yale which is the only ivy school who 'like' diversity.

Harvard only accepts like 20-50 foreigns students each year i heard.

You don't understand, having a college (or graduate) degree shows you are part of a certain social class. If you don't have a degree you will have to be much, much better than the people with a degree to be treated the same way.

Ivys are a signal you are part of an elite social class. If you went to an ivy it's likely you had classes with people who will become very successful after graduation. Some of the success of the graduates has little to do with the university. If you came from a well connected, powerful family it is likely that your family will use their connections to help you succeed.

If you are a reasonably social person graduating from an ivy means you might have some friends in (or soon will be in) high places. This is very valuable to business etc.

>> No.2895628

Because I'm probably not smart enough to get into one to begin with. On top of that I was generally unmotivated during my highschool years and barely managed to get into a state university, but was strongarmed by religious parents to go to BYU instead, where I got expelled a year later for making a half-hearted suicide attempt prompted by overexposure to mormons. Had to go to a shitty community college to get my AS just to work my life back into enough shape to be able to transfer back to a state university.

I think that took more than 10 seconds, though.

Not the guy you're quoting, but I think you're partially making his point for him.

College is, for the most part, a very inefficient source of actual education, both for the amount of time you spend and the amount of money you spend. It is, like you said, more of an indicator of social class. Anyone with the willpower to do so could pick up a few physics textbooks and be brought up to speed with a Ivy grad in a few months. But, the downside is, no one will hire the guy whose only credentials are "I read a few books and learned it myself" opposed to the guy who actually attended an accredited college. Having a degree from Ivy league schools is basically a self-perpetuating myth; those that come from Ivy schools are expected to be successful, therefore they're given more opportunities or resources to be successful. Really, a degree is more about having a strong "they are at least this knowledgeable" baseline to measure against, not a "who can namedrop the most prestigious universities" pissing contest that it has become.

Ok, but just understand you can't change the system...

I don't have a PhD, but I get paid about the same as my PhD colleagues. I have to work much harder than they do though.

Also, most people in the business world don't have the skills necessary to tell if someone is good at technical subject "X" so instead they look at a person's CV and say "Oh, PhD from university of fancy! They must be good, keep them on the payroll"

Having said that, being exposed to professors who are experts in their respective fields is actually a nice experience, and you do learn.

Yeah that makes sense, sorry for being so snarky to you.

I guess the only point I was making is that the way to fight the stereotype that ivy league people are superhuman is NOT to create an equally false stereotype that they're all just trustfund legacy kids.

Having an ivy league education doesn't necessarily mean you're the next einstein, but it doesn't necessarily mean you're a stupid rich kid either. People who assume either one reveal that they have something to gain (usually pride) by blinding themselves to the reality that there are geniuses and retards at every ivy league school, state school, or community college.

Because school does not teach you shit. Nobody asks me harder then my parents or my girlfriend why I don't get an education. I don't even fucking have a highschool diploma.

You want to know why? Because school doesn't teach you how to live, or even how to work, (btw, "work" is a nice way of saying "enslavement". How nice of the system to let us IN A VERY LIMITED WAY choose our masters...) it only teaches you how to serve. Do not question authority, do not even question WHO is authority. Anyone bigger or who talks more bullshit then you is the authority. Thats all you need to know. Do what you're told to do, don't bother to invent, react, speculate... just pull the lever, stuff your face, fuck some fat girl you settled for, and make babies so there's a whole new crop for the next generation to pull levers for us while you die painfully of bone and muscle degeneration from all those nitrates in the food you stuffed your gullet with.

Yeah, you want to know why I don't work? Because I'm not a nigger, that's why. I'd rather con and weasel my way into staying alive. I'd rather suck on the teet of a welfare program then work somewhere that doesn't appreciate me, and spend my life beating myself up over dreams I was never allowed to fulfill.

Yeah yeah yeah, I could've done something better with my time. So could you. Why didn't you? Where did studying for twelve to thirteen years in regular school get where? Nowhere but McDonalds. Where did studying for another ten to fifteen years in college get you? Nowhere but a white collar office. Me? I'll gladly prove I can work at McDonalds or the office whilst I sat on my ass all day watching cartoons then, and now. And I'll work half of the time you do, and with a lot less worry about how I'm going to support myself. Because quite frankly, I don't give a damn. I don't WANT to contribute to a system that won't treat me like a special little snowflake.

Ivy league colleges have shitty science undergraduate programs with respect to top tier public schools.

UCs (UCSD, UCLA, UCB, and UCSB), UIUC, UNC-CH, Georgia Tech, etc.

ultimately, it is the strength of the graduate program itself that has the largest effect on the undergraduate program.

it can sometimes be difficult to gauge this, however.

graduate programs are often ranked on citations and publications.

Ivy league schools are disproportionately weighted in terms of CITATIONS .... this is because they employ heavy weights in the fields.

these people tend to be cited more often because they have done fundamental research that EVERYONE must cite.

public schools are usually disproportionately weighted with respect to PUBLICATIONS because they are more involved in high impact cutting edge research.
but in general, public schools often do a better job:

it is cheaper for people to do research in public schools because the tuition is cheaper.

your advisor pays your tuition, and if he only has to pay $10,000 per year (+health insurance), instead of $70,000 per year (Ivy league graduate tuition)....

he can afford more instruments, more chemicals, more post docs, etc.
