Most of learning from elementary to college is 100% useless and is only learned to score good on tests. You can be totally uncreative and dumb, if you bluntly study long enough you'll score high enough. Asians who study 24/7 are a perfect example of this.

I fucked around in highschool and had to work my way up to a mid/upper-tier university in my field from a low-tier one by working my ass off. I would like to go to Princeton or MIT for grad school, but I don't think I'm really smart or accomplished enough to get in.

But... I didn't study or really try on ACT/SAT. Got very mediocre scores.
Plus I didn't really try to apply to any Ivy's because I got accepted to the first uni I applied to anyways. I didn't really have any ideal universities in mind so I applied to the nearest one.
Also there's practically no way I could afford it. I have scholarships but they only apply to Florida universities (aka Bright Futures Scholarship) and I can go to college essentially for free because my scholarships pay for everything.

Variety of reasons, half because I'm lazy and half because it would be financially impractical.

Also, I make myself feel better by realizing that the valedictorian of my school went to the same university as me, so it can't be terrible. He was a seriously smart kid and he could have gone anywhere he wanted. Where you go for your undergrad doesn't matter nearly as much as what you do during your undergrad years. Going to an Ivy League school as an undergrad hardly means shit.

I honestly think I could have gotten in to one had I tried harder and basically had my life sorted out better in high school. Unfortunately I dealt with a lot of shit and slacked off and ended with like a 3.3 GPA. However I was an IB student (basically equivalent to all my classes being AP) and I think the stress of it threw me back.

Had I not been IB and taken normal classes and just a couple AP courses in what I was interested in I think my stress level would have been much lower, I would have been leading a much more fulfilled life, and I would have made better grades. All of these things would have gotten me into a much better school and basically just a much better future than what I have now. Plus no one ever knows wtf IB is anyway.

So kids, don't overload yourself with work and stress. That's not the way to get where you want to be.

asian here. sucked dick during highschool. not literally but started with 1.7gpa from fucking around with friends. 9th grade is still in middle school in my state. 10th grade straightened my act a bit ended year with 2.4 in MYP(the program shit before IB) 11th grade switched to different school because didn't want to do IB because school would get certificate that year or they claimed that. didn't get shit for MYP cause they lied so left them. at other school signed up for ap calc ab because i didn't know about ap classes and thats the only higher math they have. got a 4.0 last term ended year with 2.914gpa. 12th grade signed up for 5 ap classes going to another school on A days because they couldn't fit all the classes in. got in car wreck stopped doing volunteer. stress came with that crash. grade first term was 3.7 second term 2.8 and third term i know it's worst thant 2.8 don't know what. 4th term atm i have 5 Fs. going to stupid state university because poor gpa and shitty ACT(29) and SAT(1910) and SATII(780 math, and 720 physics) so i guess tbh i'm just a niggerfaggot that likes to stick his dick in his pooper.

I didn't apply for hardly any Ivies because I knew that there were kids out there that were many times better than me. I got accepted into the University of Notre Dame and I'm content with that. (Also accepted into Wash U, but there is no way I can pay 50k per year. Notre Dame will be about 20.)

And to all the people saying connections don't matter? You're fucking retarded. Sure, you can get away with going to a lesser undergrad school before moving on to higher things, and maybe you'll even land a great job. But in the end, connections are everything.

You don't understand, having a college (or graduate) degree shows you are part of a certain social class. If you don't have a degree you will have to be much, much better than the people with a degree to be treated the same way.

Ivys are a signal you are part of an elite social class. If you went to an ivy it's likely you had classes with people who will become very successful after graduation. Some of the success of the graduates has little to do with the university. If you came from a well connected, powerful family it is likely that your family will use their connections to help you succeed.

If you are a reasonably social person graduating from an ivy means you might have some friends in (or soon will be in) high places. This is very valuable to business etc.

Because I'm probably not smart enough to get into one to begin with. On top of that I was generally unmotivated during my highschool years and barely managed to get into a state university, but was strongarmed by religious parents to go to BYU instead, where I got expelled a year later for making a half-hearted suicide attempt prompted by overexposure to mormons. Had to go to a shitty community college to get my AS just to work my life back into enough shape to be able to transfer back to a state university.

College is, for the most part, a very inefficient source of actual education, both for the amount of time you spend and the amount of money you spend. It is, like you said, more of an indicator of social class. Anyone with the willpower to do so could pick up a few physics textbooks and be brought up to speed with a Ivy grad in a few months. But, the downside is, no one will hire the guy whose only credentials are "I read a few books and learned it myself" opposed to the guy who actually attended an accredited college. Having a degree from Ivy league schools is basically a self-perpetuating myth; those that come from Ivy schools are expected to be successful, therefore they're given more opportunities or resources to be successful. Really, a degree is more about having a strong "they are at least this knowledgeable" baseline to measure against, not a "who can namedrop the most prestigious universities" pissing contest that it has become.

Also, most people in the business world don't have the skills necessary to tell if someone is good at technical subject "X" so instead they look at a person's CV and say "Oh, PhD from university of fancy! They must be good, keep them on the payroll"

Having said that, being exposed to professors who are experts in their respective fields is actually a nice experience, and you do learn.

Nobody will believe this but I make well over $150k / year and I'm just a high school graduate. A DoD SECRET clearance and military experience do more for me than all but the most advanced degrees. My income potential reaches $300k/year if I choose to work overseas all year.

I appreciate the value in a degree, but only in scientific disciplines. I can also appreciate how a rich useless fuck would want to blow 4-6 years in college studying arts. It's just fun, I guess, but it's not very productive and income doesn't seem promising.

I slacked off during school/Academic Decathlon and barely graduated high school/only got a 7,200 overall score at the state level. This was mostly due to depression and feelings of inadequacy.

I'm probably not intelligent enough either, nor do I possess any amount of diligence. I also do not have any money so I have to work full time and I can't even afford community college.

ultimately, it is the strength of the graduate program itself that has the largest effect on the undergraduate program.

Ivy league schools are disproportionately weighted in terms of CITATIONS .... this is because they employ heavy weights in the fields.

these people tend to be cited more often because they have done fundamental research that EVERYONE must cite.

but in general, public schools often do a better job:
