We're never going to colonize mars, the amount of energy needed to keep it's atmospheric pressure and temperature the same as Earth is too much, you'd need to continually produce 10000s of tons of gas a day and maybe an artificial magnetic field, if a civilization had that kind of energy it wouldn't be pissing around trying to make mars fit for fleshbags, put it that way.

>Question One: If you terraform Mars, making it into a Garden of Eden, won't this be temporary, since Mars isn't big enough to permanently hold onto an atmosphere.
>Answer: You are absolutely correct. Mars is a small planet, and hence it's gravitational field is not strong enough to permanently hold onto a dense atmosphere, but it is sufficient to hold onto an atmosphere for thousands to millions of years, which is enough for us. Once we terraform Mars, there will be enough of an atmosphere to take of all our needs for generations to come.

One day missiles are going to go off. Its going to take a long time to terraform a planet, and we haven't got that much time.

Sorry to spoil your pipe dreams, nerds, but Earth is the best planet available, and we should take care of it before we decide to move elsewhere.

No, the air pressure could easily be 900 millibars with the use of a soletta melting the gas out of the rock over areas that will soon be inundated by oceans
>and most of the gas will be lost within a few months, not millions of years.
But it won't. The sun's solar wind isn't that great to wipe off an entire thick atmosphere within a year.

The only way to colonise mars is to create life forms and machines suited to the environment, these will operate slower than earth organisms due to the lower temperature and low sunlight, which will be the primary energy source, but given enough time they will be able to create a diverse industrial economy and accumulate enough energy for space flight to colonise other planets.

Mandatory sterilization is a retarded and unworkable solution.

However, I don't believe unlimited longevity would cause a population explosion. If you knew you could stay young and fertile indefinitely, there would be no reason to have children in your 20s and 30s. Most people are not impatient to have children, they just think they'll want them eventually, so they better have them young before it's too late.

Probably a lot fewer people would want children at all (since the urge is in large part a bid at "immortality"), and those that do could wait until they had a century's worth of accumulated wealth and experience.
