Do we or do we not use 10% of our brains. Tell me /sci/.

Nope. Your probably barely hitting 2% OP.

70% "wire" neurons

we are working at full capacity

>> No.2781393

The 10% myth is used by unoriginal science fiction writers who desperately want a pseudo-scientific explanation for telepathy and telekinesis.

In reality, we basically use 100% of our brains. We don't use it all at once, mind you, since certain parts of the brain are for certain tasks and we don't do every possible task at once. But the point is that we certainly don't have an extra 90% just sitting there waiting to be unlocked.

>> No.2781417

We do use 10%. We just don't use ONLY 10%.
We actually use it all.

In response to OP's question, it was in the day when they'd only mapped/understood 10%, it was taken out of context and voila, now you have a myth. It's uttter bullshit. We use it all.

Also, this is not a question for /sci/

Just looked it up, there appears to be some ambiguity as to how and where the myth originated but that doesn't matter. We use it all, that's all that matters

I had a fella seriously trying to convince me on /tv/ that humans only use about 0.005 of their brain potential.

He based this on the fact that people live such routine lives and they get tunnel vision from it, shutting their brain off to all other input they could get if they just opened their minds.

We are always using at least 95% of our brains at all time, but each normal day we use 100% of it.
some parts we do use for different functions, such as doing math, thinking, heart beats, etc. but tehy are all being used..
HOWEVER.
there is a lack of brain usage, in terms of how hard people use their brains. A little more than 10% of each part of the brain isn't used to its full capacity. But in order to do that you would have to multi-task doing many things simultaneously, or work hard at one thing to exercise your brain that way.
TLDR:
we are always using all of the brain, at all times. But different parts of the brain more strenuously than others, and for prolonged or detracted periods of time.

>> No.2781509

We use all of our brains.

Or, to say the least, all of our brain has purpose, and we have the capacity to use all of it. So we may only be using 10% at any given point. But its extremely misleading to say we only use 10% ever.

I actually had a funny conversation with my mom about this

"Hey Son! You know how neurologists always say we only use 10% of our brains?"

"Thats a myth"

"... I dont want to argue."

On an unrelated note, maybe I should be less argumentative!

More like! Alienating people with an exaggerated sense of correctness! Am I the only one who has this problem?

Someone says factoid A, and I recall like a huge archive of worthless information Ive studied over the years and it just flies out of my mouth habitally. Im never trying to show off, its just what I think about.

>exaggerated sense of correctness

I wouldn't say it's exaggerated to correct someone on something that was likely only told to them in the first place for the express purpose of depriving them of some wealth. You preserve their fortune and prevent a charlatan from being rewarded for being dishonest.

This is bullshit, because idiots misinterpreted what the dude who first said it wanted to say actually.
I was once told that this statement was due to Einstein, making a remark about people who weren´t able to concentrate well.

Keep it brief then. If someone doesn't spel a word corectly I'm not going to give them a 3 our leckture on it. Bad example, but it gets the point across. Pretty much, compromise for the sake of being social

Yeah this is my opinion too. I like making disagreement as blunt as possible and I appreciate it when people state outright that they disagree with me. But I get the feeling that most normal people dont feel this way. And that people rarely converse to "discover the truth." Its more like, developing sympathy for your fellow man.

This is probably what I must do.

>> No.2782132

Technically, yes. Think of it this way, when you are playing a game, the part of your brain used for writing isn't in use. We don't use it all at once because sections are specialized for different tasks.

>> No.2782169

How come no one said that it might be because our brain is made out of about 10% of neurons and 90% of glial cells? Anyway, it might be because of this.

That is one of the theories about how the myth originated
