Why is the galaxy spiral shaped?

So I was watching the whirlpool in the aftermath of the earthquake, and wondered why the milky way galaxy takes that shape.

Pic related, the solar system.

You answered your own question: because it spins.

Could be from /b/ though.

it has to do with conservation of angular momentum.

so.. galaxies start out as giant balls of gas and dust. some shit clumps together by mutual gravitational attraction and the "center" is formed. the other shit "falls" toward the center and what isn't snatched up by the actual center's mass starts orbiting. as these orbiting clumps take shape and become more massive, mutual gravitational interaction with the "center" increases and the orbits contact. as this happens, conservation of angular momentum dictates that the angular velocity of orbiting bodies must increase. as this happens, faster moving bodies sweep up more leftover shit and two things happen.. the planar deviation of different orbits decreases and gravitational attraction between bodies increases; stabilizing the overall shape of the galaxy.

tldr; fuckin galaxies, it's how they work

Honestly, one of the great scientific mysteries of the world. Nobody knows for sure, but people will instantly spout theories of "gravity" and "hawking radiation" to try and explain it, though really they're just guesses. At least it's better than "lol GOD DID IT" (as an atheist a general rule of thumb I follow is to punch someone in the face every time they mention god or religion)

yeah because the only way to prove your intellectual prowess is to punch someone in the face when they mention something you don't agree with.

You are fucking retarded? You can derive the shape of galaxies using General Relativity dumbshit. It isn't a fucking mystery!

Total guess:

the sun's gravitational pull is not equal on all sides so maybe the center of the milky way mimics this?
Or by chance more matter was thrown out on one area and the gravity of these bodies created the spiral shape?

You can derive all that shit from general relativity, it is probably way over your head though. But, yeah, we know exactly why they are shaped that way.

Yes, a very very very very accurate theory. The theory predicts spiral galaxies, and we fucking see spiral galaxies.
