how do you turn a nuclear power station off?

the moon phobos???
are you sure?

Use HAARP to make an earthquake

Insert control rods all the way, circulate cooling water for a few months/years. Seal in concrete.

This.
Sucks to be you if the water pumps fail

You use a neutron moderator [e.g. control rods] to absorb all the neutrons being produced by the radioactive fuel.

>> No.2703553

so they cant turn them off in other words?

radioactive materials will always radiate till there is nothing left.

define turning off.

chain reaction? yep no problem

decay heat? not so much

couldn't they just remove the core, abd place it somewhere away from anything with hydrogen in it?

Replacing fuel rods in a reactor is a logistical nightmare under perfect conditions.
You wouldn't be able to remove the rods fast enough in an emergency.

>> No.2703635

it really is flawed concept then isn't.
who smart idea was it to build power stations with such a unstable fuel, when there is just no means to turn it off.
give me a wind mill anyday.

>> No.2703644

>>2703635
You can stop most of the reaction, just the stuff that doesn't require neutrons is harder to control.

>> No.2703662

>>2703605
>make the fuel rods into circular tubes
>removing the rods and replacing them is as simple as turning a wheel

Well shit looks like I just invented the generation V reactor

it's as smart idea as using solid rocket motors on a manned space craft.

Good luck powering Tokyo on windmills.

Not when each one is fucking hot and radioactive.
It takes ages to remove fuel rods and dispose of them.

>give me a wind mill anyday.

Heh.

Instead of being hard to turn off, it'll turn off randomly all by itself whenever it feels like it.
