So I don't understand: how come when we nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the fallout stayed contained mostly to those areas. Yet now with these nuclear power plant reactors on thread of meltdown, everyone is worried that the radiation will spread across the whole country and even to other areas.

It's because people are scared of something they don't understand (radiation) and the sensationalist media is grabbing at every straw than can to scare people into watching/reading the news, which makes them more money.
Read Al Jazera, Reuters, or BBC and not garbage like The Guardian, Fox News, CNN, The Sun, etc.
