How does /sci/ feel about Asimov?

>> No.2651708

He gets me hard. But I don't think that has anything to do with /sci/

To make it more on topic, we can discuss things in his books?

-Psychohistory and if it would ever exist in a practical sense
-Space travel / alien life? / the future & forgetting about the origin world

>> No.2651730

I think he's terrible, as is the entire "Big Three". Americans have shitty taste in fiction.

>> No.2651731

What's the name of that short story where they ask the machine the meaning of the universe or some shit?

>> No.2651737

We already have psychohistory. It's called Economics.

The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, but Asimov didn't write that.

Foundation is my favourite book
i've read pretty much all the 'core' novels: the robot series, the empire series and finally the foundation series. I've also read the majority of his short stories, although some are hard to track down
Asimov is my boy and i wouldnt trade him for any other scifi author even PKD

Because the big three are all American and were only popular in America... You are dumb.

heavy on substance, no style whatsoever.

I like my Coffee black, too.

>> No.2651806

Has anyone noticed that not a whole lot happens in his stories, actionwise i mean. Most situations are resolved either through conversation, or of their own accord.

>>2651806
Just like 4chan, if anything was ever resolved that is.

I like it black too, but I usually put something in it just so people don't think I'm some kind of freak. WELL NO MORE.

>> No.2651835

>>2651829
People who put stuff in their coffee are the freaks, or they just buy really horrible cheap coffee.

Read all of the Foundation that was written by him (the other authors sucked). The first and the last were my favourite, everything in between not so much, because he dragged it on and on and on for too long (also wtf is up with the mule?!). Loved the endings, he really got me on Foundation and Earth and Prelude to Foundation.

Really loved Bicentennial Man, the last question and End of Eternity, Caves of steel and it's sequels were really neat and had some cool concepts.

not so fond of his writing style though because he has a tendency to drone on and on, but sometimes it really shines and he catches you off guard.

Sci has no taste

>> No.2651909

A central theme of his books seems to be smoking on spaceships with nuclear powered ash trays.

I don't entirely understand.

>> No.2651931

>>2651909

It's a very subtle way to show how radically advanced their technology is for one. Smoking on a space ship = not good for you except these guys own so much they can.

>> No.2651971

>>2651909

Because the world forgot how awesome nuclear power is.

>> No.2652019

Asimov is science fiction for people who like science and aren't too worried about hot aliens and explosions.

Novels:
Foundation Trilogy
The End of Eternity
Robot Series

Three Must Read Short Stories:
1. The Last Question
2. Nightfall
3. Hostess

Starter material:
The Tragedy of the Moon (short stories and non-fiction essays.

The crux of Asimov's writing is that he doesn't have a grand, eloquent writing style, but the substance is indeed heavy, which makes for a style of its own. Also, his non-fiction essays are fun to read.

As you might be able to tell...I highly recommend giving his stuff a read.
