Since there is no financial board i thought this would be the closes board to it ask this question: I got an economics project where i need to invest $100,000 (theoretical of course) in 5 different stocks no more than $25,000 each for a term of two months, and i really want to beat my eco teacher. So my question is what does /sci/ think i should start to look? I was thinking something like intel because it looks down and cheap and I think it will go up soon. So really Im looking for suggestions, it can be even a product that you think a lot of people use or something like that I could invest in, but it needs to be a short term investment since, as stated, I only have two months,

if you know anything about finance, you would know that the first rule of finance is that you basically cannot beat the market without insider information, or taking more risk.

in this case you would have the best chance of being the best in the class by taking as much risk as possible.

invest 25,000 each in 4 companies, the smaller and risker the better.

It's common sense; if oil prices go up, and you have the oil (and byproducts like gas, plastics, etc.), then you would make more money.

A large portion of the profits are from investing heavily in Exelixis when it was down. My heavy investments in a Chinese agricultural company (CGA) and an Indonesian telecom (TLK) haven't paid off - at least yet.

Basically, I took vetted stock picks, matched a balance portfolio, and then used extra money to double down on stocks that went down significantly without a change in their rating/assessment from the guys who did the original vetting. Now at least one of them is paying off richly. Doubled by $3,700 investment in Exelixis. (EXEL)

Other recent winners were BOOM (up 70% since my investment), UNH (up 43%), DNR (up 77%) and GOOG (up 34%).

Those are the best out of 22 stocks I've invested in - and I'm up about 20% overall, though the portfolio isn't especially balanced. If Exelixis goes way down, I'll lose most of my profit.

no one knows what they are talking about here. the only way to win this game is for you to go balls the walls leveraged. buy some cheap stocks so you can have more shares. to explain this to you could buy more shares when a stock is trading at $4 rather $100 like a lot more. so this position is going to be more sensitive to price changes. the problem is you could come in last using this strategy as well. a little note is that you should only use this strategy for this simulation not real life unless your a pro. now you need to move on to picking the actual stocks the important part. no one knows what the market is going to do and i dont consider myself an expert. best thing for you to do is to do some research. if i tell you what stocks to pick i could be wrong but if you actually research it you will have some benefits. one idea is to watch cnbc at 6pm eastern. this is jim crammer. jim is a crazy dude and his show is entertaining. he suggests stocks he likes. sometimes hes right sometimes hes wrong. i wouldnt take his advice in real life if you didnt know what your doing but for a simulator its not bad. also look at some stock picking strategies. some key search words to get you started: fundamental analysis, technical analysis, day trading, candle stick charting. some websites: google or yahoo finance, wsj.com, investopedia.com, marketwatch.com, day trading rock star. good luck.

this. i played a similar game in high school. killed it. they have to cost at least $5 per share? that's gonna be a small problem. what i did was watch for ones that seem to fluctuate between 1cent and like 3cent. then buy at 1, sell at 2 or 3, and you double or triple up. similar strat for you should work ok. but you won't be able to double up or anything. maybe look for ones that hover around $4-$6. buy at 5 sell at 6, bam 20% profit.

but buy the cheapest you can for maximum profitz

You can't be serious. Intel has been stuck at $20 for like five years.

For a two month timeframe, you should just hold onto the cash. That short of a timeframe is purely a gamble, and there's like a 40% chance your teacher will lose money even if he plays perfectly. In reality, he probably doesn't know WTF he's doing and has a much higher chance of losing money.

look for a cyclical penny stock. something that goes up and down like once a week regular as clockwork.

we have stocks like that because investors make them do this by investing in the way I'm about to describe...

wait till it's at the bottom of its cycle, buy.

just before it's set to peak, sell and short sell.

wait till it drops, buy more.

be aware that predictable cycles like this only last a few weeks at most before we move on and start pumping some other stock.

the value of the stock doesn't matter, predictability is the first factor and the size of the fluctuation is the second.

a stock that goes up $5 bucks a month is worthless compared to a stock that regularly goes up and then down $7 a week.

I used this knowledge to beat my high-school accounting teacher at a mock day-trade, and got my picture in local and state newspapers for making several fake millions over a couple months.
