It's maybe a 30 minute drive in traffic, but you can take a train for maybe 10 bucks, campus to campus. I think the train stops very close to the Rutgers campus. Unreal amounts of fantastic lectures here, so definitely make a point of it.

>So ... how's the weather? haha
Fuckin sucks. You're Euro, eh? I'm guessing that means you don't know much about New Jersey, so allow me to summarize (like most people at princeton, I'm not from NJ). There are 50 states in the US. If you were to poll them, 49 states would universally agree that New Jersey is the shittiest state.

And ten bucks ... I mean I have to come back after the lecture because I sure can't plan on having a "Princeton day", there are lectures at Rutgers too. So that's 20 bucks a day, say two lectures a week, that's a lot of money over a few months. But maybe I'll change my mind once I'm there.

Before I moved here I would've thought it was blown out of proportion, but it's pretty rational. It's actually worse than expected (caveat: Princeton is considered to be "not in New Jersey" by the natives, because the town is considerably different from the rest of the state.) Like in the New Brunswick area, you have high crime, high traffic, it's downright dirty, a dearth of culture, and New Jerseyans as a people are the most unique combination of arrogant and retarded that you'll find in the US.

But there are some very nice areas like PU, and the rural areas can be very very nice.

>So that's 20 bucks a day, say two lectures a week, that's a lot of money over a few months. But maybe I'll change my mind once I'm there.

American bread is terrible, no denying, and the food overall is pretty bad. Cheese is a serious problem, and sausage, and fruit. American food often tastes like it was made as a display item in museum--"this is what food looks like"--without intending that anyone would actually eat it. BUT you can always get what you want, especially in a college town, and Rutgers is big. You can find a good bakery and a gourmet shop. Get a bicycle--things are spread out.

I went to grad school for a long time, with a lot of Europeans, and I'm sorry to say it but you may find that it's hard to make friends with Americans generally, and that you're more comfortable with other Europeans. American culture is provincial because Americans don't travel much and aren't much interested in other cultures. Of course, there are always exceptions, especially at a college town, but in my uni (which was in a major US city), the foreign students usually ended up hanging out with other foreign students. Which is not so bad, because there are a lot of them, and they're smart, but still it kind of makes me sad.

One more piece of advice, if you don't mind hearing it: as a foreign student, you are going to have to endure a LOT of bureaucracy. What's worse, most American unis (and I don't know about Rutgers, but I don't expect it to be different) don't put a lot of resources into the international-students offices, and these offices are very badly run. Every year, a huge number of students (not proportionally, but in absolute numbers) end up not being able to return to the US because of simple administrative problems that the bureaucrats were too stupid to fix.

>> No.2609229

>>2609227
Two solutions: make sure that you are well-connected with the international-students community, because they will know what needs to be done better than the office staff; and make sure that whenever you go to the international students office, you are VERY polite, and above all, NEVER appear to be superior or condescending. Americans often feel superior to other people, and don't think that nobody will think "Oh, Germany, we beat them in WWII (blah blah blah), so he has to be deferential to me." It's amazing, but it's just a sad fact. (You're lucky you're not Chinese, let me tell you.) So: be nice in that office, AND, if you can, try to "make friends" with someone who knows what they're doing. Learn the person's name, and send thank-you notes when they help you. A personal connection can help a LOT.

Good luck. Thanks for coming to the USA. In terms of science, we need all the help we can get.

Now that you guys start arguing about how shitty and selfhating some Americans are, here's my German view of that.

I'm German and I don't love my country. I don't dislike it either; nationalism has no meaning for me. That's not historically motivated, it's simply the point of view that what matters in my life is primarily myself. I'm not part of a big community of Germans, I'm a human. If I had to limit myself to a region I'd say I'm European, but even that would just be to be able to say something when someone found it weird that I don't "belong" to a country.
There are some awesome people all around the world, and I don't see how having the same president, speaking the same language, having the same skin color would mean that I'm awesome too because some of my fellas are.
I'm not proud of what people in my country are capable of doing, because I'm not the people in my country. I'm an individual, and we've got the best marathon runner that doesn't make me better at sports.

The point was that many (not all) Americans can't stand anyone criticizing America, and that they get very hostile and angry when they perceive anyone criticizing any element of it--EVEN THE BREAD AND THE CHEESE.

And it is a FACT that Americans travel less than Europeans--mostly because the country is so big that it takes forever to get anywhere. There are quick trains from London to Paris. Not from Paris to New York.

Notice that I never said I hate America. I don't. I love it. But I'm not so chauvinistic to ignore the terrible things about it. The fact that the most popular politician today is Sarah Palin means that I don't really have to justify my beliefs to anyone who has enough intellectual interest to pass the time on a Saturday making conversation with some random German physicist on /sci/.

Oh wow, republicans sure have cornered the market on stupid!

>Go have another Big Mac and forget the whole thing.
Yes, every American that won't wholesale denounce everything about our educational system, government, electorate is a Big Mac-eating, Walmart-shopping mouth-breather. You keep right on telling yourself that if someone disagrees with you on anything for any reason, it's because they're inferior to you. After all, you're so incredibly open-minded and liberal, right?

I'm an American-born individual educated entirely in the public school system prior to my current graduate study at Princeton (which is in America, FYI.) While earning my PhD, I'm receiving a generous wage while performing core scientific research funded largely by various branches of the federal government, resulting in the best possible resources at my disposal. You'll have to forgive me for disagreeing with your notion that the US is rife with anti-intellectualism.

Another dangerous moron elected to the US Congress...who isn't a Republican...proves...that US culture isn't anti-intellectual? Or that there are lots of different kinds of dangerous morons around here?

I never denounced the American education system--I said that we are in decline and need help. And we do, because our great scientific intellectual heritage is at risk of being lost if we don't keep bringing in foreign students, postdocs, and professors.

As to the great research funding you're enjoying--hey, I never said we weren't RICH.

Yes, bring up the superior European train systems! Good work so far, caricature of self-loathing American guy. So far you've covered Sarah Palin, travel, homophobia, creationism, Detroit, McDonald's, and Walmart. Bring up drug laws and the prison system, and you'll have exhausted your droll unoriginal default talking points.

Aside: I was pretty bummed recently when I couldn't take a train from NYC to LA, so I had to settle for a 5 hour flight on a 747 at 600 mph.

>The fact that the most popular politician today is Sarah Palin
Sure, the "most popular politician today" is the vice presidential nominee from two years ago that lost. Thanks for the lecture in reading the news though.

Right. Everyone else is dumb, you're smart, we all got it. Also, you're not pretentious.

America these days are plagued with the most nationalistic retards, especially since 9/11, who have now proceeded to fuck over everything else. But there's a faction of libertarians/leftists that oppose the idiocy ruining the country.

It depends on the school and campus, but not really. Rutgers does has it's own dedicated police force (legitimate state police not mall security guards) but you rarely ever see them much outside of the football game(Not the good kind of football/soccer).

RU is a good University for undergrad (as long as you keep in mind that the deans and advisers have their heads up their asses most of time regrading policy) but the graduate program suck.
