They originally had $10 each. 10 * 3 = 30

They were given a dollar each, 11 * 3 = 33.

She kept 2, 33+2=35.

Isn't maths excellent.

This is actually a pretty good example of some kind of system for pseudologic that exists within the brain. It's troublesome that the methods used here make sense to most people, and the only way most can refute this is by using the correct methods, rather than directly debunking the method used.

ok so to start they each give 10$ (30$ total)

if the clerk gives them back a dollar each then the clerk has $27 and the three men each have a dollar so still $30 total

looking at it a different way, each man paid a total of $10-$1= $9
the $9 they each paid gives the clerk a total of 27 dollars. You dont add the two dollars the clerk is in possession of because they have aready been accounted for. You need to add back the refund they got to the $27
$27+1+1+1= $30

Each man paid 9 dollars, 8 and a third of which went to the hotel owner (8.33333... x 3 = 25) 2/3 of which went to the clerk (0.66666.... x 3 = 2) and get 1 for himself.
(8.3333...+0.6666...+1)x3 = 30
The error here is that It counts the money that each man gave away and the money that the clerk recieved, rather then, say counting the money the men each man gave away or the money and the money they walked away with. The thirtieth dollar is in their pockets

clerk goes back with the 5er, gives 3 of it back and keeps 2, so 25 + 3 + 2 = 30

people tend to think o wait, 3 dollars back, so 10 + 10 + 10 = 30 , 30 - 3 = 27, so they all paid 9. clerk has 2, and now its 29, WTF.

actually : 9 + 9 + 9 = what they paid, 2 is what the clerk gets, so 25 for the boss.
