Do any of you /sci/entists think there is an actual way to become smarter? As in, more intelligent? Not just more cultured or knowledgeable, but more intelligent.

Yes, but not with existing drugs. There would have to be something that mimics the effects of our endogenous brain neurotrophins (growth factors). It is certainly possible.

But before such a drug is accidentally discovered, I suspect we will have AI brain implants.

> Not just more cultured or knowledgeable, but more intelligent.

This is like asking someone to make a faster computer with no intention of running any software on it. There's absolutely no point in you becoming more intelligent unless you're already at some some of limit, even if it is possible. If you want to be super smart so you can just spend and hour a day studying and play video games and fap the rest of it, know that even the most brilliant work very, very hard to accomplish what they do.

One would need to become more logical. So study your own logical flaws and improve upon them. Also, improving the ways you can think about a problem also may help.

This is why I asked OP what he planned to do with his "improved intelligence". If he wants to learn to chew through physics books and win a Nobel prize, then the best way to do that is...

Work your ass off reading physics books. You get better at things by doing them over and over again until they are intuitive.

by gaining knowledge you change yourself
and you get smarter
your IQ will rise too
but don't go too exited about that
there will always be someone better than you
and there will always be some things that you will never understand

I don't think you can become smarter, but you can learn to use your brain more efficiently.

Definition of INTELLIGENCE
1.
a (1) : the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations : reason; also : the skilled use of reason (2) : the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one's environment or to think abstractly as measured by objective criteria (as tests)

>the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations : reason; also : the skilled use of reason

If Intelligence is quantified by dealing with new or trying situations, then your intelligence's breadth can be increased by constantly seeking a variety of situations.

Which ironically antagonizes what OP was saying: becoming cultured (definition #1) or knowledgeable (definition #2) in many different things actually increases your intelligence by this definition because it exposes you to new situations.

You get more intelligence just by doing something with your brains. see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuroplasticity

Our brains have ability to modify themselves physically through experiences.

Intelligence or "smarts" -in my opinion- is not much different than athletic ability. Each of us is born with a certain potential and aptitude for these. The only thing that is set in stone is our natural talent. And the talents themselves only determine the upper threshold of our ability, and the rate at which we gain skill. Everything else, and what each of us does with the talents we possess is up to the individual.

Take for instance, a child born with a supreme gift for speed. He trains hard everyday for years and years, and one day he goes on to win the gold medal in the 40m dash at the Olympics. Now imagine that same child, except he spent his entire life playing video games and eating cheetos. He would get his ass handed to him in a race by someone much less talented (assuming they worked hard and developed what talent they had).

Intelligence is no different. If you don't use your natural gifts, you lose them. And if you don't work hard, you will never reach your full potential. Few people ever truly reach the limit of their own intelligence. Gaining knowledge, and putting your mind to work is how you make yourself smarter. Give that fucker a workout from time to time.

It's true that some people may never run a mile in <4 minutes, no matter how hard they train. And some people will never understand highly advanced maths, no matter how hard they study. But you'll never know your own limit until you reach it.
