I know this sounds like 18th c. pseudoscience, but is it true that a big head generally means a greater intelligence? I have a big head and a bulbous forehead, which I was made fun of for most of grade school. But I have done quite well on standardized tests (won't give out scores because as Stephen Hawking says people who do that are "losers" lol).

Have you noticed a relationship or is this just all bunk?

>> No.2575460

Ever noticed how stupid people have big noses...

>> No.2575466

>>2575460
Well, this has a direct relationship as opposed to noses. The head houses the brain, so the bigger the house the more shit can fit inside, right?

>> No.2575468

Bigger head = bigger cranial cavity = bigger brain = more neurons = more neural firing = more intelligence? Maybe?

>> No.2575472

Yup. High-IQ people tend to have abnormally large heads, myself included.

In all honesty, I don't see why it should be that important. Encephalization ratios are really only useful when comparing different species from each other, not different members of the same species. That said, the only supergenius I've known (perfect SAT, finished undergrad studies in math in 2 years, absolutely brilliant conversationalist) had to order a custom cap for graduation because the one he had wouldn't fit. I've heard of this before (most famously Chris Langan), but I don't know how much it corresponds to a real ratio.

Polite sage because we're discussing phrenology on /sci/.

Firstly, define intelligence.

it's not just a big head, it's a big brain in proportion to your body size.

Obviously other huge ass animals have bigger brains than us, but they are smaller in proportion to their body size.

Good point, good question. I'd say: 1/2 IQ, 1/4 working memory, 1/4 verbal ability

I've always wanted to meet someone like that.

That's a stupid article. Read a study. Head size and intelligence are extremely highly correlated in humans.

I'm no doctor, but for most organs, isn't being "enlarged" a dis-advantage? I would think an enlarged heart of lungs or w/e would actually be worse at its job instead of better.

>> No.2575521

Hmm...Einstein had a below average head and a below average brain size. I don't think it's by any means a primary determinant.

Chris Langan?!?!?!?

GET. THE. FUCK. OUT!

>> No.2575538 [DELETED]

>>2575505
He was pretty normal in most ways, and took a surprisingly long time to learn how to play games. But when he actually did learn how to play, something like a switch would turn on in his head and he'd become the best of all of us at it. We grew to envy and perhaps resent him. Mostly I resented him for his wit, which never ran dry and was always very creative.

What do you have against him? He's the 2nd smartest guy in the world, after Kim Ung-yong (had to look up that name).

Einstein had an extremely abnormally large part of the brain (forget what the part is called) that is used for spatial reasoning.

>> No.2575582

>>2575514
Yes, if your brain is "enlarged" that means you have an infection and inflammation. That doesn't make you smarter. However, if you are born with a larger than average brain cavity displacement, you will statistically speaking more more likely to be smarter than average.

You can get the fuck out too.

IQ tests are useless for determining who is the smartest person in the world; there's a reason why most reputable IQ tests don't give scores higher than 150/160.

Not to mention that Chris Langan is obviously not a genius.

Brain size =/= phrenology

Phrenology determines characteristics and personality by bumps and shapes of the head. Like a bump above your temples would mean you are a psychopath, etc.

Feynman had a sub 130 IQ, as I recalled. IQ tests are able predictors of education and income though, so while on an individual level its meaningless but lumped together it has significance.

apparently you don't know much about him beyond the poorly cited article or youtube video. He, rick rosner, and marilyn vos savant had a professor or mentor of some sort who taught them all just specifically to excel at IQ tests. They don't have any actual intelligence, none of them have contributed anything of worth, and Chris Langan, in particular, thinks he can prove God's existence with binary...

I saw an interview with Chris Langan on utube once and he seemed pretty intellectual for a blue collar guy. I mean, he comes from a harsh upbringing. He got a perfect SAT score but got expelled from college because he pulled some prank.
