But marijuana dependence is real. Dr. Drew says a surprising amount of the addicts he treats are primarily marijuana addicts. I've read the numbers, I've read some of the literature regarding the toxic effects some cannabimimetic drugs can have on the brain...I think our culture is slowly developing an acceptance toward something which really is unhealthy. I think we will see many more schizophrenics in the coming decades when the effects take hold on the generation born in the 90s.

That said, a little toke now and then is not bad. Like a celebratory cigar, why not whip out the bong in celebration of some achievement?

I'll agree with you that marijuana dependence is real but only in the psychological sense akin to how someone could develop a dependence towards over eating, video games, or even television. Though marijuana is not physically addictive like many other psychoactive substances such as opiates, and amphetamines. cut off a marijuana users habit and they will just become unhappy that they cant get high, cut off a heroin users habit and they will go through physical withdraws. Hell even benzodiazepine found in prescription anti anxiety medication can be physically addictive and the withdraws have even caused deaths. compare marijuana with many prescription drugs and you'll be surprised just how much healthier it is.

Agreed with most of what you said. My main beef is that people--mostly ppl my age--are starting to think weed is somehow "healthy" or good for you. The 1950s-esque, Reefer Madness stuff is equally irrational, but it doesn't make sense to swing to the opposite side and say it's harmless. That proposition in California that attempted to make weed totally legal is a manifestation of the culture's changing attitudes, and I believe it is false progress. Marijuana won't kill you the way heroin or cocaine will, but it will have toxic effects on your neurobiology and possibly your mental health.

Certain drugs like alcohol and marijuana are relatively harmless with great moderation (< once a month). People shouldn't kid themselves, though. They are putting themselves at risk if they overindulge in marijuana.

it's okay to let your body get a little roughed up in the course of your lifetime. sitting for hours in front of a computer, exercising too much, or eating fast food all leave scars. i doubt smoking weed once every couple weeks (or even once a day, with the proper equipment) will have any sort of crippling, quality-of-life-reducing effect on you. the important thing is that you have fun while your here. unless you're an astronaut or something. i think you just have to be more/less cautious depending on your own natural resilience.

Well if you are a chem major then what substance in marijuana is addictive? If it's a physical/chemical addiction that's one thing, but people can form psychologically to just about anything.

Also, I know thc can exacerbate previous mental problems most notably bipolar and schizophrenia, but are there any studies that found it to create new mental illnesses in subjects?

>> No.2570982

i wish the problem of psychological addictiveness wasn't treated like it was nothing. people act like you're no more likely to get addicted to pop tarts but thats just not true. the process of getting high can be fucking habit inducing and some people have a really hard time shaking it, because the mental state achieved is not the same as someones casual enjoyment of soder pop.

Marijuana is classified as a hallucinogen and like other hallucinogens it can bring out latent mental disorders. Though like any tryptamine if you don't have the prerequisite for any mental disorders there's really nothing to worry about

>> No.2571012

Not saying psychological addiction isn't power full or real. Just that it can be applied to anything that exhibits a response. People have been diagnosed with being 'addicted' to eating and thousands go to sex addicts anonymous meetings. Both of these things are normal and healthy, but people are somehow addicted to them.

Exactly! Smart man here. Psychological addiction and habituation can have profound effects on the brain.

Seriously you guys; there would be no such thing as MA if it weren't a problem. It's funny how some stoner-types cite the large number of users as somehow evidence of its "harmlessness." Last time I checked, lots of people using a drug is not a positive mark on that drug!

To the person who asked, the addictive substance in cannabis is tetrahydrocannabinol. It crosses the blood brain barrier quite well due to its lipophillic nature. It has a rather great affinity for the CB1 receptor, causing among other things euphoria (but none of us need explanations there) and analgesia. The latter is of interest for medical applications, although there are pre-existing medications which perform the same effect with less contraindications.

One thing about which I am concerned is its ability to disrupt GABA function. This very reasonably be the cause for the incidences of marijuana-induced anxiety disorders. Marijuana addicts often end up abusing BZDs or alcohol when they develop an anxiety disorder.

If you're a marijuana addict, get help. There are many resources at your disposal to help your recovery. Don't try to justify it intellectually, though. Get healthy and be happy.

Right. Marijuana addicts are in a unique position in that they can be relatively functional with their drug abuse and interpret their semi-functional capacity as evidence that it is not bad for you. Conflicted with questions of guilt, their left brains rationalize their compulsive behavior by going the next step and saying it's healthy for them (and you), which is where the fun stops and the treatment must begin.

If you want to smoke some weed once a month or so, fine. But humans rarely indulge in psychoactive substances with moderation, so avoidance from it is the best option.

These are all topics of addiction medicine and addiction psychology.
