We speculate on the circumstances of the second coming of jesus/the end of the world (for those with an inadequate sense of humor)

So jesus comes to [your town] and says "Ok everyone who is white and American, please follow me onto the magical escallators. Everyone who is not, please get onto these busses. everyone who would consider themselves a generally unpleasent human being, please follow mr. satan down the stairs into the movie theatres.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Historicity_of_Jesus

I will now begin quoting

"The historicity of Jesus concerns how much of what is written about Jesus of Nazareth is historically reliable. The historicity of Jesus covers a spectrum of ideas that range from "the gospels are inerrant descriptions of the life of Jesus"[1] to "the gospels provide no historical information about Jesus' life including his very existence".[2][3][4][5][6]"

>> No.2555772

2555772

"The existence of Jesus as a historical figure has been questioned by some biblical scholars; among the earliest were Constantin-François Volney and Charles François Dupuis in the 18th century and Bruno Bauer in the 19th century. Each of these proposed that the Jesus character was a fusion of earlier mythologies though Volney felt that confused memories of an obscure historical figure might have integrated into this already existing solar mythology.[58][59]

In the first half of the 20th century, the views of scholars who entirely rejected Jesus' historicity were based on a suggested lack of eyewitnesses, a lack of direct archaeological evidence, the failure of ancient works, like those of Philo for example, to mention Jesus, and similarities early Christianity shares with then-contemporary religion and mythology.[60]

More recently, arguments for non-historicity have been discussed by Guy Fau, Prosper Alfaric, W. B. Smith, John Allegro, George Albert Wells,[61] Earl Doherty (The Jesus Puzzle, 1999), Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy (The Jesus Mysteries) and Robert M. Price and the idea has been popularized in the early 21st century by some of the writers like Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, representing the New Atheism movement."

* The Pauline epistles, earlier than the gospels, do not provide evidence of a recent historical Jesus.
* The story of Jesus shows strong parallels to Middle Eastern religions about dying and rising gods, symbolizing the rebirth of the individual as a rite of passage. He writes that Christian apologists have tried to minimize these parallels.[15]

That's actually not a good heuristic to use. Absence of evidence is the ONLY POSSIBLE evidence of absence.

Now, this is one of the major problems of induction - you can search forever, find no evidence and still not rule out the possibility of x existing.

However - this applies to objects such as celestial teapots, that have no good reason to be there.

So what we do is use the falsifiability criterion. To argue for a retreating god who hides from our search is to make an unfalsifiable statement. It can be proven right, but as the existence of god is not immediately apparent this is not a useful way to do things.

Its opposite, that is, there is no god, IS a falsifiable statement. It can be proven wrong at any time. In statistics this is what we would call a null hypothesis. You assume that this statement is true until evidence against it is found, because unlike its inverse, evidence SHOULD be found if a god exists.

TL:DR: russell's teapot.

This is scientific method. Scientific method is one possible way to do science. It is one possible, but I would argue, not very good method for making life choices.

Why would I live my life according to the scientific method? I have a gut feeling it is much better to live life differently and trying to do things strictly to the scientific method is not very useful.

Perhaps I should state it more clearly.

Take hypothetical entity x. x is part of the set of concievable entities, C, which is infinite, because no matter what you attribute to it, you can always add more features.

Now, what we want to find is whether x is a part of the set of existing entities, E. E, as far as we can tell, is finite given conservation of energy.

Now, say we have no evidence of the existence of x. Agnostics here find a fence to sit on, a mean to regress to, and claim that it is forever undecided.

However, given that C overlaps with E, there must be a probability for a random member of C also being part of E. However, since C is infinite, and E is finite, the ratio of their size is infinitesimal, as close to zero as makes no odds.

Thus we can say that gods, unicorns, millenium falcons, stargates, tesseracts and fairies, without empirical evidence to the contrary, have an average chance of existing that is almost none.

So what exactly do you know about the controversy around stem cell research. You wrote 4 ALL CAPS points and three of them were about stem cell research.

As I understand it the issue was, that destroying embryos for creating stem cell lines was deemed immoral by many. There were already several stem cell lines from already destroyed embryos. It was decided, that since these are already destroyed they can be used for federally funded research, but new embryos can not be destroyed.

After a while a new procedure was found for harvesting stem cell lines, that does not involve destroying embryos. Research with stem cell lines harvested by that new procedure can use federal funding.

Is this about right?

>> No.2555998

The end of the world should be just brutal, no jesus coming.
A massive meteor, earth sized is coming towards Earth. Religious people start praying in the churches, while scientists start thinking on a way to destroy or change the route of that meteor or whatever mean to overcome the imminent destruction. As the year passes, all countries are focused just in one thing, survive. All the economies are put aside, fuck the money, it's just a piece of paper, the greatest minds unite to build a weapon capable of change its course/destroy it, after some years the weapon is finished and the moment of truth arrives. All the nations are united as one, praying, believing. The laser (or whatever the fuck it shoots) is fired and obliterates the meteor.
Soon after that event humanity shouts 'THANK GOD' , 'MY PRAYERS WORKED' and everything go back as where they were before.
Once again, god taking credit in everything.
scientists get mad, develop a lethal virus, kill everything.

Note the diagram indicates that embryonic stem cells are derived from a blastocyst. It's a ball of stem cells. It doesn't have any organs, tissue, a mouth, even a TAIL yet. It is physically incapable of suffering. A worm is worth more as a sentient being. An insect is definitely worth more.

In fact getting stem cells from more developed embryos is stupid, since the development uses up the stem cells.
