what does /sci/ think about the idea of an space elevator?

would it be profitable? of course it is cheaper to send a climber attached to a cable to space than launching rockets. but what about the costs to build and maintain a space elevator?

I can't imagine the complexity of having a super-strong tether remain in geosynchronous orbit above the earth. I mean, wouldn't the force needed to move something up that tether be basically the same as a rocket anyway?

Source needed retard.

Would material would you use to create this? Carbon?

One time I have been trapped in the elevator
I had to pee and I finally broke down the door to get out

What would happen if I'm trapped in the elevator in the middle of space?

It takes days to get to geosynchronous orbit using one of these.

There will be bathrooms if they are ever designed for ferrying people.

And personally OP, I find it very doubtful that we will ever build a space elevator.

There are other launch platforms like the skyhook and space fountain that sound far more plausible to me than a 35,000km long elevator.

And for something that can accomplish bulk transport [thousands of tons] of material into orbit TODAY - look no further than project Orion.

I'm sorry but summoning Inurdaes requires the use of one instance of leopardgirl.jpg, which causes him to pop out of nowhere like an Imperial Guard and post his SHOULD NOT WANT face.

Now the summoning turned a lot more interesting.

maybe its the same force, but you would use less energy. i mean, you could have two poles and pass electricity between the two, as opposed to having to have the initial thrust big enough to both lift the load PLUS all the fuel required to lift the load at a later date.

Space elevators go to geosynchronous orbit - for Earth, that's a little over 35,000km's. [Nearly 3 times the diameter of the Earth itself.]

I don't quite understand the attraction of a space elevator. It's cool for taking things to geosynchronous orbit. But there aren't all that many things we need up there. It doesn't confer much advantage for putting this in low earth orbit, or getting things to the moon. The moon it at least gives some advantage, but are you really going to pull a giant rocket up the elevator to do the moon trip?
