It's that time again, /sci/. Time to combat anti-intellectualism!

How will we do such a thing? It's simple, really.

ITT, we post an interesting tidbit of information from our respective fields. It doesn't have to be something profound or "cutting-edge," just something you feel is worth sharing. It can be something very close to your individual research, or something you've only recently discovered.

Let's educate each other!

If any of you have even a casual interest in the origins of modern computing, read up on this man.

It depresses me that so few people realize how important he is to the age we live in.

How much it raises it contingent on the molality.

However, you can make water boil faster by putting a lid on the pot. That's one is actually correct. Charles' law and whatnot.

Also, most things dissolve better in hot or warm liquids, and can even achieve concentrations impossible at lower temps, but that will retain that concentration at lower temperatures. This is the principle that some hand warmers work on and is really useful if you want to dissolve flavorings into cheap booze (skittle vodka, anyone?).

The Gibbard-Satterthwaite theorem states that there is no non-dictatorial voting mechanism where, given three or more candidates, it is in every voter's best interest to vote sincerely.

If you're the philosophical type, you can view this as proof that honesty and politics are inherently inconsistent. But you really shouldn't, because it's a fairly technical result and may not mean what you think it means.

if you analyse skelettons for gender the hip bone will tell you pretty sure what gender it is.
the skull however can only be used in northern populations, like northeurope or northasia.
the more you go south, the more female and male skulls are alike.

swing and a miss there buddy
the addition of salt (solute) decreases the freezing point, and increases the boiling point

as in salt + water will require a greater change in temperature to boil than pure water
