seriously bro. the shit you learned in quantum is 1/2 of the first quarter of the physics BS 3 quarter quantum curriculum.

its about 1/2 of the "mathematical methods for theoretical physics" course taught in that same curriculum as well.

for gods sake, Chemists dont even know how to do simple convolutions of complex functions (which is taught to all physicists when they learn time-dependent perturbation theory in their 2nd or 3rd quantum course as a part of the derivation of the semi-classical theory of 2 level systems and lasers and whatnot)

I would love to see a chemist tell me what the GS electronic energy of an H2 molecule is using DFT, assuming all the usual simplistic assumptions (like the simplifying assumptions about the laplacians).

I would love to see a chemist tell me how to solve for the bound state energies of a simple 2d dirac delta potential distribution assuming translational symmetry (eg using assumptions gained from Bloch's theorem).

I would love to see a chemist tell me the GS energy of the H2 molecule using UHF theory.

you use green's functions (read: convolution with dirac delta), variational theory (no, not <psi|H|psi> >= Eo, the variational theory applies to the wavefunction and takes the form of |delta> and the ket), and the antisymmetrizer.

I AM A FUCKING CHEMIST! I take extra courses in the physics and math departments for the sake of learning extra shit.

upon taking the phys curriculum quantum, the math department's upper division ODE and PDE courses, the physics curriculum intro to complex analysis/PDE/numerical analisys, etc...
I rage when chemists say:

BUT WHY IS THIS INTEGRAL ZERO, HOW DO I KNOW WHEN integral (x^3dx) over R (-inf,inf) IS ZERO!

it makes me rage super hard....

99% of chemists do chemistry because they think:

"oh it will be cool like science but with less math than a physics"

and then get mad when people ask them to take 2 derivatives, or to integrate periodic functions.

"zomg we had to take the exponential of a matrix, can you believe it?"

that type of shit = rage for me.

well, the best (most highly paid and well respected) jobs CURRENTLY in chemistry are:

materials science...

polymers, semiconductors, catalysts, etc.

just look at the UC system, MIT, an CalTech...

the Materials departments (and/or the specialty nano-research department-within-departments that focus mostly on materials) all have MOST of the "new" money.

its about 75% lab work (including instrumentation) and about 25% computer simulation

most of the computer simulation is done by ChemE and physicists, and the remainder is almost all chemists (by Ph. D. major, not undergraduate major.)

undergraduate major means almost nothing

Try being a sophomore Mechanical Engineer sitting in their dynamics class not paying attention... Until you hear a SENIOR ask "Where did that d(theta)/dt come from?"

The teacher had taken the derivative of r*cos(theta). r was constant.

I'm by no means good at calculus, physics, or math. I have no aspirations to get a PhD. I'm not going to derive or consider where the simple physics I'm using comes from. I won't be using any of the math talked about in this entire thread, but even I got pissed off hearing someone that's about to graduate not understand how to take a simple derivative.
