My god, so I was compelled to watch this show because it seemed quite interesting and it was on Discovery Channel. I was expecting some experienced engineers and miners to share their expertise, but instead this is the bullshit that I get:

>Complete redneck group of workers who don't understand shit about engineering
>Create a HOME MADE mining contraption without any professional assistance
>Entire season is just about how their shit doesn't work
>"We put our machine together, but the stuff that actually requires you to use your brain doesn't work!"
>"Let us pray to lord that we find gold today"
>Blow nearly $250,000 on shitty amateur equipment and hours of fuel usage
>Only after they're in complete debt, they actually get an actual engineer to look at their machine and tell them what's wrong.
>Real engineer tells them all of their fucking filters are fundamentally flawed and that they've probably washed 95% of their prospective gold down the fucking drain
>Bunch of dumb fucking inbreds get told like retards.

More great news, after 3 fucking months of mining, they mined a total of 2.7 ounces of gold.

People back in the 1850's fucking found more than that by panhandling in half the time.

>> No.2478162

never seen the show, probably never will.

but most US miners, whether pro or hobby, are more interested in the image of mining than the actual processes. They take that image pretty serious, and it isn't one of well-calculated brilliance.

what you describe sounds pretty accurate and representative of the average miner.

You know, I expected Discovery's other shows like Sons of Guns and Brewmasters to be like that.

I expected a show about making guns to feature a bunch of hill billies firing random shit at targets, but they're actually incredibly knowledgable about their craft.

Same with Brewmasters, I expected a show about making Beer to be your typical jughead alcoholic, but they're all very experienced in the industry and every episode is about them thinking outside the box with brewing ingredients.

How the fuck did a show about Gold Mining end up this shitty?

Gold Rush: #1 Cable Show in America

I've started to notice a pattern where the shows about the stupidest shit and featuring the most retarded, mouthbreathing participants are the most popular in the US.

Do idiots like to watch other idiots because they can relate?

gold mining mostly appeals to the rugged individualist, the mildy eccentric and slightly antisocial people at the fringes of society. Always looking for some indepedence, and some untaxable income.

These folks abound in the west, most are not to bright. I'd say the channel guaged its target audience and brought them something they'd enjoy.

Those of us that actually mine gold might be entertained also, in much the same way that watching a train wreck can be entertaining.

also remember it's entertainment, not reality. The journey is more important than the goal. In reality I've personally mined countless pounds of gold and worked with companies that mine tons of gold, but my story will never be a tv show.
