These are the triangles not counting crossing paths.
number of triangles 1 wide: n+1
number of triangles 2 wide: n
etc. etc.
n + 1 + n + n - 1 + n - 2 ... + 1
(n+1)(n)/2
Now, we double it for symmetry.
(n+1)(n)

Each one of these can then be 'stopped' at any n+1 points, including the edge.

(n+1)^2(n)

Since both sides include the fat triangle at the bottom as well as the total triangle, subtract 2.

(n+1)^2(n) - 2
