Anyways ; The reason this works is because the shadow of an object traces nearly a line as it passes along. Using this and adapting, marking observations, you can turn this into a rather accurate clock, an accurate compass (takes a couple days for perfect accuracy), a marker for when and where the sun rises and sets, etc etc.

If you're clever enough, you can triangulate how far north you are in the world, and what part of the season you're in using this. But that takes skill and a fucking huge version of it for accuracy.

Ancient Druids 1, Christianity... well... dark ages I suppose.

What amazes me is the amount of knowledge that the Greeks etc accumulated way back then regarding the solar system and other stars etc.

To think they actually mapped out the fact that the earth rotated the sun and where the other planets are in relation is absolutely astonishing.

Even just the realization that the earth was globic would have sufficed to astound me for a civilization so far in the past.

Then you factor in the reign of Christianity, and it seems everything was reset. Imagine how advanced we could be now if Christianity had never existed.

So... the idiot just likely tore his NIC card out, and I did some calcs on OPs image... in theory it should be pretty accurate. Of course, the pentagram is up to interpretation, but the theory of mapping north and time using a circle in the ground and observations works out almost perfectly.

I'm definitely doing this on my next camping trip. I'll leave it behind in the hopes that the next camper will comprehend it's purpose.
