I hardly ever visit /sci/ but I decided this was a good reason to. Remember when watching the Discovery Channel meant shows like Wild Discovery, and documentaries about anything and everything scientifically interesting? Hell even How It's Made was pretty cool. Sadly, those days are gone. Now Instead of Wild Discovery we have shows like Axmen, where we learn about how awesome deforestation is (lol). Now, instead of journeying into the past of ancient civilizations, we now are bombarded with program after program dedicated to biblical prophecies, and whackjob UFO sightings when we tune in to the History Channel. Though those days of excited learning seem to have passed, they still live on in us, in our latent curiosity and thirst for knowledge about our world and the universe. I propose a thread, dedicated to those days, those channels, those experiences we all shared when we were younger. Who's with me?

Pic related, it's a fucking massive oarfish.

Science TV sharing thread?

>see a NOVA on trebuchets
>already interested in medieval warfare
>build a 4-foot-tall trebuchet
>take it to school, show it to physics teacher
>he suspends class for that day and the class goes to the football field to do some physics lesson involving throwing things with the trebuchet

Those were the days.

I was youtubing oarfish, and I found this video. How much would it blow if you put an oarfish into a big aquarium with sharks in it and as soon as you put it in there, one of the sharks goes right up to it and bites a big chunk out of it. Dude, that would so blow. The head marine biologist would be like, "fuck, we don't have too many of these, fucking shit, kill that stupid shark!" (I heard the sharks don't normally eat the other fish in their tank if their kept well fed enough, but sometimes they do.)

Hey guys, does anyone remember the name of that show that we all watched in elementary school? The intro was the camera zooming all around a museum type building (all the walls were white) and on the walls were pictures of all the sciency/animal things that the show would cover. Also the music during that intro was awesome.

I'm sure someone knows what I'm talking about. I just don't remember the name.

with the average person wanting more dumbed-down entertainment, i wouldn't count on networks investing a lot of money into anything relatively interesting.

remember, what you see on network tv is generally what some PR asshole thinks will keep the masses entertained enough for them to not flip the channel during commercials.

thank god for the internet and books. often the only way you can learn anything of substance. and even then, you have to scour the fucking things.

Back when teaching and learning was favored over test performance and job preparation.

Going Wild With Jeff Corwin

Jeff Corwin traveled to some of the most exotic places in the world, and searched for some of the planet's most amazing animals. In each episode, Jeff searched for a "Feature Creature", and always found it at the end of the episode

It was like Blue's Clues + Animal Planet, but it would always come on during dinner, when I was doing my homework, and I would be absolutely mesmerized by it. Granted it aired on the Disney channel, but the Discovery and History channel need to up their game man, their current line up sucks dick.

Why would they air programs that morons and frat boys can relate to/enjoy? these are supposed to be shows for nerd god damn it!

What I wouldn't give to see Wild Discovery on TV again.
