Find a common denominator, add like terms, solve.

the x+5 & x-1 cancel out the x^2-4x-5 right?

1) Factor denominator on the right side.
2) Multiply each of the terms on the left side by each others' denominator over denominator.
3) Add the two left terms into one.

Yeah...multiply both sides by 1..aka (x^2-4x-5)/(x^2-4x-5). This will clear out your denominators, solve for x.

x/(x+5) + 5/(x-1) = (31x-1)/(x^2+4x-5)

(x^2 - x +5x + 25)/(x^2+4x-5) = (31x-1)/(x^2+4x-5)

(x^2 - x +5x + 25) = (31x-1)

x^2 -32x +5x +26 = 0
x^2 -27x + 26 = 0

Using the quadratic formula [-b +- SQRT(b^2-4ac)]/2a

x = [27 +- SQRT(27^2 - 4*25)]/2
x = [27 +- SQRT(629)]/2
x = 26.0399, x=0.9601
