does /sci/ get high grades in class?

>> No.2396320

I only have a 3.2

Four A's, three B's, and one C.

>> No.2396331

I generally get B's in my sciences and maths

A's for the rest

>> No.2396336

I used to. Then last year I suddenly lost all motivation and stopped going to class and doing my assignments and my grades dropped from As to Cs. I failed a course for the first time last fall; it felt pretty shitty, but in the end I think it was a good thing because it made me get off my ass and talk to one of the school counsellors. I've been feeling a lot better lately, and I've made some changes to my academic plan, so I'm optimistic about next term.

This past semester I got a A, B+, 2B's, B-, gives me exactly a 3.2, which was my GPA going into the semester. Talk about no fucking exciting at all. But I got the A in my hardest class so iuno.

My cumulative is at 4.00 (out of 4.50) right now.

I really fucked up my first year English class (C+) which counted for twice the credits as a regular class. So that's been a bitch on my GPA.

>> No.2396361

Had straight As all through highschool. At university I realised quickly that all I needed to do was barely pass everything to get a degree and a fun job, so that's what I did and everything worked out as planned.

>> No.2396363

i'm not lazy or extremely smart, but i work hard at my research. in intro classes (ie. physics I) I get a's, but so does 25% of the class. then in higher classes full of engineering and science students, i still do well, but i don't study as much as others. when a hard problem comes up on a test, there doesn't seem to be a set pattern of smart people getting certain problems right- it just seems like a matter of 'knowing what's what at the right time'. occasionally, i miss some solutions that others who aren't as hardcore in science as i am get. however, i do a lot of research, and am extremely good at figuring out things in a field given i put ample work into it.

there are many smart people, and i would say there are a lot of engineering and science students who are smarter than i am, but i put in a lot effort into research and am very confident in my problem solving skills.

I'm graduating this semester and have a 3.8.
Not flawless, but not bad.
The only "oh fuck" was my first semester of Calculus when I got a C, but I got revenge with an A in the second semester course.

I think I may take a year off and work before I go to grad school. It's not like grades expire, right?....right, /sci/? Am I making a terrible mistake?

4.50 is an A+. 4.00 is an A.
So with my one C+ combined with all my As and A+s, it averages out to just an A.

ugh... 3.38 out of 4.

Got a 3.91 GPA when you only count my bio, psych, and neuro classes (neuroscience major). 3.77 if you include chemistry, physics, and math (thanks a lot orgo). Probably somewhere in the 3.8 range if you include everything.

Protip: All grad schools/med schools/(insert type here) schools will convert that GPA to a 4.0 scale. Meaning that in reality that 4.5 GPA is the real 4.0. What you've got there is actually an 89% or a B+ on most grading scales.

For the record, this is why most colleges don't do A+ grades. At first glance it looks great until you realize it makes extremely difficult to get a real A.

>> No.2396462

>>2396408
our grades are on a per class basis.
You're assigned a letter grade in your class. Each faculty generally has a specified mark range for each letter grade (some classes 91% and up is A+, other classes it's 94% and up). The letter grades are switched to the number system (out of 4.50) and then averaged to get your overall GPA.

>> No.2396465

>>2396430
As long as you're actually doing something during your gap year(s) you're fine. Gap years only hurt you if you did nothing. For some people they're actually necessary (didn't get enough research experience in undergrad for example).

That said, keep in mind that in this economy it's hard to get jobs, so you could find yourself unintentionally unemployed for your whole gap year which will screw you over.

makes sense. Sometimes the requirement for an A are ridiculously low. I'm pretty sure I got an 83% in one of my classes after the final exam and yet I still got an A in it. I think an A+ here sounds more like what an actual A should be.

Regardless, I'm not in Honours so I can't do grad school anyways.

I don't completely know what that means. Students here are allowed to choose a general first year but you're supposed to decide on Arts or Science for your second year. Not everyone does, of course, but they don't really encourage people to take too much time with it.

Senior in High School here, got my first B (as a semester grade) this semester in BC Calc. Technically it could be a B+ if it's rounded up but knowing my Calc teacher he would go to three decimal places if the school's system let him. But it doesn't really matter to me since I've done all my applying to colleges and I think that given my test scores, GPA, and class rank, and extracurriculars, I have a fairly decent shot (I'd guess 25%) at MIT and better chances/guaranteed at some other places- I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be admitted under UIUC's Engineering Department to study Computer Science, which I'm ecstatic about.
