Some disorders listed in the DSM IV:

Caffeine Disorder
Spelling Disorder
Sibling Rivalry Disorder
Phase of Life Problem

In fact, there are over 370 mental illnesses in the DSM IV and 100 of them were "discovered" recently in just 7 years.

None of the illnesses have identified causes and none have objective tests to determine if an illness is present. Further, the claim that someone is mentally ill cannot be falsified. And finally, the null hypothesis is beyond disregarded. A person who walks into a psychiatrist's office is immediately mentally ill and it is very difficult to "convince" otherwise.

For all these reasons and more, psychiatry does not qualify as science. Thoughts?

At least he didn't say Psychology.

I also just want to elaborate on the importance of identifying causes and the lack of rigor that psychiatry puts forth.

For example, say I notice you are tired, you lack motivation, you desire to sleep, and you have trouble concentrating. I take note of your symptoms and prescribe you a new medicine made from cocaine. You perk right up and are cured. Therefore, you have a mental illness right?

Well, you displayed a lot of symptoms. And I gave you medicine and it cured you. But you don't have an illness. In fact, I failed to mention how you haven't slept in 24 hours. So I failed to identify the *cause*. This is exactly what psychiatry does.

Sadness is caused by not having a job, not having many friends, not having a sense of purpose in life. It is not caused by a brain deficiency.

oh hey scientology

More seriously, in order to qualify for a mental disorder, the particular mental disorder has to be strong enough to significantly interfere with your life. Without that very, very important qualification, yes, everyone would have a mental disorder. And that's the cause of «first-year psych student syndrome» where everyone who takes a psychology class thinks they have a mental problem, and why only qualified psychiatrists should be using the DSM to actually diagnose someone.

Plenty of people with clinical depression have still had the problem even with a great job, great friends, and a sense of purpose in life. Actually, many of them get the sense of purpose in life only with the help of antidepressants.

Yes, this is what I'm talking about in disregarding the null hypothesis. You offer no evidence and pretend your arbitrary cutoff points (i.e. at the point it starts interfering with your life it's a mental illness) has any scientific validity.

I'm not a scientologist. I really don't know how you can think regular people can't disregard psychiatry as pseudoscience. It's not hard. Did you get to the part where I mentioned caffeine disorder? It's almost a joke. If someone told me I need to stop drinking coffee because I'm mentally ill, I would tell them to please stop driving because you are clearly not competent and are a danger to other drivers.

Similarly, when I mention how caffeine disorder and you brush it off nonchalantly, I have to wonder just how unintelligent you are. How do you dress yourself everyday? How do you drive? Saying a rainbow can support my car like a bridge has more logic in it than your nonchalant posting.

You know that one thing a psychiatrist is supposed to do is attempt to find any other things that could be causing the symptoms first right?

Much of this anti psychiatric propaganda is from the scientologists.
