Any engineers in here?

How feasible would it be to build a cave and tunnel system underground below my property? I figure if the NVA could build miles of complex tunnels, I could build some simple ones.

I think my soil is mostly clay-like. Not sure about the rest.

Anyway, I'm just looking for general ideas about how feasible this might be. The fact that I've never heard of a person doing this on their property leads me to believe there are some inherent problems.

building permits are designed to protect people from themselves and actions by stupid people. For example, in my city, some fucktard decided to build a huge elevated deck not according to building codes. He had a party on that deck, said deck collapsed, and people died.

To the OP, do it right or you'll kill yourself. Get a permit, consult a firm. This is really dangerous stuff.

OP, the tunnel ceiling has to be strong enough to support all the soil above it... the tunnel walls have to be strong enough to prevent soil bursting in from the sides. That will give you an idea for the strength requirements of the materials you're gonna use

P.S. I have never taken any classes on anything like this

Unfortunately if you dig a tunnel like that, the entire thing will collapse. Also apparently my simulation says your house will catch on fire.

More realistic answer,

There is this one guy in canada that bought a bunch of old school buses. He dug trenches big enough to bury the buses, and uses them as an underground house. For you, it would probably be easier to do something similar, although I would recommend big pipes instead of buses.

Why would it collapse, genius.

Wow, so many dumbasses here.

>> No.2355441

A simple way to ensure maximum tunnel strength is to have perfectly cylindrical tunnels (you want actual tubes). Don't believe me? Look at every single large airplane or gas canister in the world. If you don't want to walk on a curved floor, build a simple flat walkway running along the bottom of the tube.

Make it out of concrete reinforced with rebar. Have a space between the soil around your tube and the tube itself. Fill this space with something mushy (think foam spray insulation). When it's time for an earthquake, your tube will be cushioned and will move far less than the surrounding earth.

A good thing to have is waterproof concrete. Obviously if you build above the water table there won't be many water problems, but hey, you never know what could happen.

The deeper your tunnels go, or farther from the entrance, the more a problem air quality is. The easiest way is a ducting system that pumps air straight from the outside (by the entrance) all the way to each dead ending tunnel. This fresh air then gets pushed back through the tunnels toward the outside. The air pressure has to be high enough so that standing in the tunnel you feel a very slight breeze (Like 1 mph). I believe the best place for these ducts is under the flat walkway. This is also a good place for any wiring/plumbing.

I am in no way an engineer, I have done almost zero study on mining/tunnel building, and I recommend you do not follow my advice. However, if I ever were to build tunnels under my property, this is how I would do it.
