So what does /sci/ think of my last semester's philosophy teacher?

pic related, my reaction on first day, and through most of the semester.

Ohhhh I see what he's trying to do.

Integrate somatic, verbal, and audio learning methods.

This would be way too chaotic for a lot of people.

ive been to high school in india for a while and they do this there, and so no this really works. if you do it right, it doesn't matter how many people there are

This would PISS me off so much that I'd probably drop that class and I went all the way through school and college on As and Bs.

This might work very well for some classes - ECE, maybe some humanities and social science classes. I really cannot see how you can make this work for a university level Math class though.

Doesn't mean it can't! Just that I'd like to see it done is all.

So I've been learning about the use of hydrogen as fuel lately, and how the only waste material is H2O. It seems a lot of people are really focusing on making this widely available, but I have a concern. If all car owners were to change to cars that run on hydrogen, wouldn't the dramatic increase of water in the air have some negative consequences? After all, water is one of the major greenhouse gases. I've never seen or heard anyone mention this when talking about hydrogen.

this "teaching style" is respected only in a situation where the students haven't even hit puberty yet, or are well below the standard intellectually. involved or not, these kids won't understand shit, they will simply be more capable of regurgitating information than if they simply had lecture slides and a textbook and a monotonous teacher. all the responsibilities of learning are on the student, a more motivating teacher can only help so much.

well in the video you showed there wasn't much critical thinking going on, so if hes teaching philosophy im assuming hes teaching to a test. if he does leave room for critical thinking and analysis, im assuming he gives you "hints" aka the complete answers each time. he should be teaching because he has the energy and confidence, but it would never be an academic course.

I have my PhD and 85k position at one of the biggest companies on the planet. When will this growing up nonsense happen?

Sigh, now I feel like a chump for playing the accomplishments card but for some reason this post irked me.

>> No.2348258

That was absolutely horrible. They really aren't learning anything at all. It's just one big circle jerk with the teacher.

I would never take a philosophy class, but I would be absolutely ashamed if I was paying tuition for something like that.

That power learning will help them alot when they are working at mcdonalds because they learned no real skills or knowledge in college

I am surprised I didn't see a bunch of macs in there.

we had a quiz to start each class, yes a quiz each class. the friday "quiz" was much larger in point value. yes, the entire class was a "teach to the test" lecture.

>> No.2348391

This seems like a horrible ideal.

I'm not quite anti-social, but I am not a high-energy person.
So just watching that video was annoying.

Inciting specific responses and interactions between students doesn't seem like you're teaching them anything, just brainwashing them with useless things.

I might not be so critical if I saw this method used for actually teaching something, rather than a demo of how it works.

He's not actually teaching anything, he's just conducting a closed forum discussion about something the students should have taught themselves before attending class.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6rOIOW2Jf0
The "advanced techniques" video.
He sets up a very specific area of discussion on a topic and tells the students to tell each other what they already know.

>> No.2348613

I think the problem with this method of teaching is primarily centered around memorizing facts and perhaps learning how to rephrase facts you've been thought.

It's probably absolute shit if you try to teach something on a serious level.

However as long as you use on classes like introduction to philosophy, which is basically a long history lesson on philosophy has evolved, sure it's probably very effective.
