I want to construct a forge. The reason I want to is to smelt all broken/old/used metals for the inevitable supply and demand in the future. What should I know?

>> No.2339911

You should know mineral chemistry

What other chemistry might you or anon suggest as well?

I've only taken Intro Chem and Chem 1 and I was thinking about going over the MIT Solid State Chemistry. How applicable would that be to forge activities?

>> No.2340528

comeon /sci/ there HAS TO BE a seasoned chemist around, help me believe in you again!

>> No.2340586

There is a wonderful site that has all the information you would ever need. Wikipedia.

>> No.2340736

You don't need a seasoned chemist.

You need to know what a refractory is and why it's very important that it remains dry.

Old-timey foundries weren't run by chemists. They were run by trial and error.

Are you just planning to melt metal into ingots or do you want to cast useful shapes? If the latter I hope you took shop in high school.

>> No.2340743

you need a microwave oven and some other stuff

And for a more traditional feel or for work on a larger scale;

http://www.backyardmetalcasting.com/

Starts small. Really small. Practice. Keep a bucket of sand handy for when you set fire to things. Water on molten metal is not a good idea.

this is a start.

no particular education required, most such such projects are possible without understanding at all why the process works.

That website is awesome. Too bad you have to pay for even the most basic stuff.

>> No.2340789

Pay for what now? You mean the kit to build this stuff or are you expecting to buy the books?
Because if you can't put a small backyard foundry together based on all the available photos and instructions on that site you probably shouldn't be working with molten metal.

>> No.2340796

You need to google "David Gingery Metalworking Shop from Scrap" because the first book is on how to build a cheap forge. The rest of the books are how to build precision machines with one.

I don't know if you're trolling or not OP, but it's not economically feasible for you to do with your current..um current. You can't do it on the scale that's possible with household current, even if you were doing copper.
You need to cheap source of energy. I doubt you have one.

Yeah, if I were OP I would learn about the commodities futures market, and figure out what the best strategy is to take advantage of the decreasing supply.

Who said anything about electricity?

You can melt most metals with nothing but charcoal & an air blast. Waste oil and a big forge will melt anything, including 3000 degree refractory linings.

that is the most lazy, asinine, generic comment ever. Get the fuck off /sci/!

I hope one day in the near future that everytime when you visit wikipedia it tells you to "GOOGLE MOTHER FUCKER!"

that's you typical wtf comment that comes through here on /sci/. Typically they come in and try to discourage the DIY and any thread that promotes the least bit of imagination due to their large hardon for the following..
a) economics
b) biotechnology
c) particle physics
d) nasa

and of course if you are an engineer not related to any of the aforementioned topics then you by all means are gay...

OP you are brilliant.

I too will construct a forge.

Perhaps we could be forge buddies.

Great, then we can all die from starvation and overpopulation. And STD's as we all somehow grow sterile and stop caring about protection.

Also, Reganomics.

hey OP. You MUST know only one thing, the bread and butter of all this shit. and that is this picture. Print it out, sleep with it, make love with it and so on. Everything else is secondary
