I'm sure he contributed to science but it's also obvious he won't hold his own against Keppler, Euler, Leibnitz, Newton, Maxwell, Einstein or Planck. At the end not everyone will make breakthroughs. However it's thanks to people like Sagan who gave most of their life to science we are here, slowly exploring the cosmic ocean. He was awesome and we need more people like him.

He did. In fact, he was incredibly prolific in terms of volume of papers he co-authored. However, he didn't really make any major contributions to his field and was seen more as a popularizer than a serious scientist by many (though not necessarily a majority) in the scientific community.

He directly influenced the outcomes of MILLIONS of lives, with many of those that watched/read Cosmos going on to become scientists and astronomers.

I guess that's sort of a triple-whammy.

He is mainly known for popularising science, but he also headed many NASA projects and contributed other things. He's no Boltzmann or Bardeen, but he has had an enormous impact anyway.

This thread made me butthurt.

Sagan's comos series changed my life. I watched it when I was 12 and studied science from then on. I don't even care if he did shit science.

Much as i respect him as a scientist, and much as i respect weed as a pretty awesome drug, I do get the impression he wasn't discerning enough in terms of what highdeas had any rational objective meaning, and which were just non-rational subjective emotionalsims.

He did almost no science. He measured the temperature of venus at some point.

How many scientists actually meet the criteria of greatness? We have been conducting research in the present method for a while now, and out of the 1000s of scientists there are only 25-30 that ever achieved the magnitude of people like Tesla, Newton, or Planck. This does not take away from any of the little people who may not have discovered relativity but worked to prove or disprove these theories, or just made it possible for these masters to continue to do their thing.

We need more starstuff put together like Carl Sagan.

Most of what he did was advocate science, which is pretty fucking important. He opened and still opens the minds of a lot of people. And some of those people got motivated to do actual science.

So consequently, he did a ton of science.
