If we just had to deal with the unimaginable, enormous, virtually unthinkably complex and daunting task of adjusting to the fact that oil production is going to get harder and harder to do and thus grow more and more expensive on lesser returns-a substance that not only acts as the fuel to virtually every car and truck and plane in existence, but that we use through chemical engineering to make plastics that we rely on for making nearly every thing we build-that alone is a thing so difficult to confront that it makes my head hurt-how in the holy FUCK are we going to get by when we have no more oil for Christ's sake?
But that is ONE problem out of a plethora of them that are looming on our species's horizon.
Having to TOTALLY CHANGE HOW WE FUEL OUR ECONOMY AND INDUSTRY in a process that itself will take up an ENORMOUS amount of resources, including our increasingly precious oil to make a conversion-is only one of SEVERAl huge issues we have.
Sweet merciful fuck, we are in deep gentlemen. God damn I hope we can nanomachines our way out of this one...

There's a finite amount of oil, but the amount is very large. Nuclear can replace oil pretty easily, and before the uranium runs out, we have the moon's He3 to mine. By the time the moon's He3 runs out... who the fuck know, but by that time we could be mining resources from all over the solar system.

I'm all for long-term thinking, but not chicken little-ism. Long-term thinking simply says to invest modest amounts in research of alternative technologies. Then they'll be there by the time we need them. If someone wants to use this as an excuse to "rush" to the moon in a meaningful way, I won't object.

In the same vein, geothermal, solar, wind, etc. might produce *some* energy, but definitely not *enough* energy. Our only real hope is nuclear, but that only solves the problem of electricity, leaving the problems of transportation and petroleum products (particularly agricultural chemicals) unsolved.

I ride a bike so no transportation problem. I could easily transition over to growing my own food. I have some left over treadmill motors that I haven't built into windmills yet, so that's power.

Even IF humanity decides do just ride itself into the ground, which I doubt will happen due to governments and policy change (you get enough angry people who have to pay 8 bucks for gas, you have a problem), we will plunge into a Mad Max/Fallout period for about 200 years or so, and then discover some new tech and move on again.
