hey /sci/. I'm as senior in high school, and i'm taking AP Calculus BC. Not that I don't appreciate the practice, and some of the new stuff is mildly interesting, but I'm finding it kind of boring. I'm just wondering if someone could point me in the direction of the next step in my math education, and maybe suggest a text or two.

tl;dr subject/books for math after AP calculus BC

Read it. Love it. Live it.

The progression is multivar then differential equations if you're really in need of more math. Or you could not get ahead of yourself and go have fun. Really, you'll have to take the classes either way, so waste time now or waste time later.

what subject matter would that be?

it's more about just sort of getting myself ready for college. I'm not seriously thinking of it as a replacement for a real class

really? I feel like the only real way a high school student can get himself noticed on this board is acting like a complete jack ass.

Foundations and Fundamental Concepts of Mathematics

Popular undergraduate-level text offers overview of historical roots and evolution of several areas of mathematics. Topics include mathematics before Euclid, Euclid’s Elements, non-Euclidean geometry, algebraic structure, formal axiomatics, sets, more. Emphasis on axiomatic procedures. Includes problems related to the material at the end of each chapter, to engross the reader in problems of that time, and of general recreation.

It epitomizes what mathematics is really about. If you ever read a mathematics text for fun out of class, let this be the one.

look into multivariable calculus, or if youre really that bored of calc, go for differential equations or linear algebra

thats sorta the route i went after calc in college

I assume you're reasonably smart if you're doing well in classes you're in, but you also sound like an overachiever. Useful sometimes but often not. Go get drunk or high, high school is awesome for fucking around. College is slow paced anyway, my first semester of college was my easiest school of my life.

If you want to get away from calculus-esque math, you could learn some Group Theory, Ring Theory, and Field Theory.

Alternatively, learn some vector calculus and then do some differential geometry and become the next Einstein.

Or, pick up a book about everything that Gauss or Euler did, and then look that shit up on the Internet.

Protip: that last thing I suggested will take your entire life.

Even taking calculus classes puts you ahead of the curve as far as college math goes. Sad but true.

Most any engineering degree will give you the Calc1/2/Multivar/DiffEq... You'll use minor diffeq in most of your education but that's it, even up through engineering at graduate level I've only needed some good diffeq skills.

I'm also the guy who told you to go have fun instead of overachieving, people like you are painfully awkward.

whoa man. how do you take an interest in math as making me an over achiever? I go to public school, i'm a senior. All i do is go to my 4 easy tier classes, and then calculus.

also, i enjoy how you're trying to make me feel stupid for trying to learn a little more.
