OP, you should read Guns, Germs, and Steel. The short answer is geography. It's a shitty environment for anything other than hunting and gathering societies. Agriculture just doesn't work there (and never really has, either). It's also very longitudital, meaning there's a broad range of climates, making any sort of greater unity difficult. There's actually five different races of Africans because of this, which doesn't help tribal conflicts at all.

This is like asking why any area of the world has problems. There has just been a general series of unfortunate events in the continents history. The tribal tension, isolation from the rest of the developing world from 2000 B.C. to about 60 years ago, and the general lack of medicine, technology and education which is/was caused by the first two issues I mentioned.

tl;dr: Poverty levels in Africa caused by inexplicable isolation, rejection, and bad luck have prevented Africa from having medicine, technology, or decent education systems.

In my ignorance I was so certain. Everything was black and white, but now everything is grey. If we do nothing we're leaving innocent people to a living hell. Africa has not grown for a couple of reasons:
Poor health care, the average life is around 35 years old as compared to 87 in most other countries. A better health care will improve their economy. War is bad business when it is civil war. Take the Congo for example, when most of the energy is spent on killing, then most other countries do not like to invest. The USA invested in Japan and Germany after WWII and look at them now. Unrest, doesn't make good tourism and the international community looks the other way until peace occurs. Corruption doesn't help either. They need a stable government with such a weak economy. If a resource like oil is found, then like Saudia Arabia, Africa can become rich. Copper is the only thing that they seem to have and other metals.

The governments of most African countries cannot collect taxes from the peoples because they're all poor.
Honestly. There is a horrible distribution of wealth (if any) with a Genie Coefficient (distribution of wealth; closer it is to 1, the worse) of about .9-1.0.
Also, a lot of the governments there are horribly corrupt, and there aren't that many financial institutions that want to be able to handle these peoples' problems.
It's mostly due to a poor circulation of money and local peoples who really can't learn nor want to adapt to any "civilized" views.

It might not be politically correct, but sub-saharan african culture was never conducive to civilisation.

Put it this way: they were the first continent with people, they had a period where they invented all the shit we take for granted, then they filled up, quickly. Once africa full competition between individuals became fiercer as survival was harder to guarantee so thus cooperation between people crashed. In essence the surplus resources needed for civilisation were never around. It's wierd because africa is now one of the most underpopulated continents, but this is only because of modern advancements, and the fact that africa was slow on the uptake.

This tough competitive environment meant that another essential factor required for a cooperating civilisation never occurred = High levels of monogamy.


Africa may never have had monogamy to the same levels as we do (or at least did), or maybe they did but then lost it. Either way, Africa (ok i know it's a huge continent so this IS a generalisation) is not a very monogamous place today. In fact they have the highest polygamy rates of anywhere in the world.

So, how is monogamy important i hear you say?

Well, I'm glad you asked. Inside ever man and woman is this drive to reproduce at almost any cost. This animal instinct can get stronger than you could ever imagine. Under monogamy, pretty much everyone is guaranteed to reproduce so this drive stays relatively quiet. One spin off effect of this is that males (who previously would have been fighting over mates) instead cooperate and work on things that will benifit society (i.e civilisation). Inter-male competition becomes inter-male cooperation with minimal loss in energy donated.

In places with low rates of monogamy, reproduction is not guaranteed. In fact, a significant portion of males will not reproduce. Thus the competition become fierce. Cooperation crashes. When our true reproductive instinct takes full control it is not pretty. It doesn't take a genius to work out the effects high polygamy rates will have on society.

As an African (South Africa), I'd have to say its because corruption is so common, and that black Africans are just dont give a fuck about each other.

Disease- there are things like malaria, TB and recently AIDS which kill people and make adults pretty much invalids. There are also things like schistosomiasis and other "neglected tropical diseases" which are usually nasty parasites which can cause children to suffer brain damage at a young age and become physically sick so they can't go to school.
And it doesn't just affect people- animals like horses and cattle get a lot of diseases which make them unproductive as well.
Poor land management is a serious factor too- you can't tree soils in the congo like soils in the midwest- they are completely different, and you need to grow your crops differently. People messing up the soil and hydrology causes big issues in poor rural communities.

In the vast majority of societies, if not all of them, chance of having a partner is directly linked to wealth.

In poor/undeveloped society, the strong would rule, arming out men for women i.e. the result would be polygamy.

On the other hand, the more money someone has, and the greater distribution of wealth, the more attractive males are to females, and the less chance a male will be able to force a male to yield to a "more powerful" male in the hunt for a woman.

Corruption makes them poor, agricultural tariffs and farm subsidies in the west keeps them poor.

Short-term solution: Take over and seek to educate the people and enhance infrastructure to modern levels. You'll be stuck there for a significant amount of time however, which I doubt is something the public in the west can still stomach.

Long-term solution: Let large parts of the farming sector in the west die by removing subsidies and tariffs. This will allow farmers in Africa and other poor regions a chance not to rely on widely fluctuating cash crops for their income and instead move to growing food crops.

Corruption will easily continue to be an issue for another century or two, that's just how it is going to be, these nations have been barely on their own feet for longer than 50 years. There's no real weeding it out except through the slow passage of time as the people and nations achieve real civilization instead of mockery of an imitation of western civilization.


Neither will happen as nobody in the west would support it for obvious reasons, Africa will remain a corrupt hellhole freely available for plunder.
