What are your future academic or personal goals? (Be realistic).

How are you working to achieve those goals?

>> No.2172487

Here are my goals:

Complete an undergraduate degree in Mathematics.
Pursue either a MSC in Mathematics or Computer Science. Focus in Recursion Theory or Theoretical Computer Science.
I may pursue a MSC overseas (US student here)
Once I complete a MSC I'll pursue a PhD in either Mathematics or CS with a focus in Recursion Theory.
After my PhD (if the world still exist) I'd like to do research in the Industry (like IBM, Microsoft,HP) or possibly become a professor. I'd rather not have the obligation to teach though.

from here, I will either work in Washington DC (I have an internship set up and, and job placement is pretty common in this program), or go into grad school.pursuing a PhD in Economics. Concentration is unknown, but my overall goal would be to economically strengthen the western-friendly world / developing weak nations and make them western friendly.

I think a lot of people here don't realize exactly how hard it is to get a PhD, especially in physics. Shit is crazy competitive, probably the most competitive field out there is physics. A BSc in physics will get you exactly zero jobs besides teacher, and even if you manage to get a PhD you'll need to work your ass off for at least a decade before you can get a decent paycheck.

I strongly suggest anyone wanting to pursue a Phd, in any field, but especially physics to dig deeply and see if that is what you really want. Because if it's not, you might waste a lot of time and money, but above all hard and stressful work.

The pay isn't much better in neuroscience (except in clinical fields) than it is in physics, but at least it's less competitive. Generally it's easier to find a PhD position in neuroscience, but keep in mind it's still competitive. The competition is a bit broader though, I've heard of people form China and India with a degree in electrical engineering apply for PhD positions in neuroscience and those make up just about half of the applications. In general if you have an appropriate degree you'll find a spot.

With the crisis going on right now I don't think Finance or Economics will get you a job any time soon, but if you do the pay will be a lot higher. (this isn't really my field though, so it might be different, and it also depends on the country.)

I see prospect in of computational neuroscience based on how fast the field is growing and also combining my skills with math, computers, and psychology.

I'm not sure from which side to approach this, but I'd assume a higher mathematics degree will be more recognized. I'm getting a head start on programming while tinkering with HTM modules.

My endgame seems fairly interesting and satisfying, being directly involved with developing smart A.I. software and robots. There's a lot more room for application and it has already shown its usefulness (google/search optimization) even in its infancy.

If I'm not cut out or never land anything, my approach should have several fallback positions. I'll be web designing/developing on the side to rake some cash. Who knows, I might implement certain methods to web development and invest in a business there.

We strongly encourage such students to apply-- you will feel right at home. Our program aims to draw undergraduates with strong quantitative backgrounds (e.g., majors in mathematics, physics, engineering and computer science, in addition to well trained biology and psychology majors) into neuroscience. We aim to do that in a way that allows them to continue to develop their quantitative skills in the context of a rigorous training in neuroscience. Students in the "Quantitative and Computational Neuroscience track" within the Neuroscience Ph.D. must fulfill all the requirements of the Neuroscience Ph.D. In addition, their electives should be in quantitative courses, and their Ph.D. research should be in quantitative and/or computational neuroscience.

I hated learning/doing math throughout my high school education, I was bad at it and it was extremely boring to me.

I spent two years at comp sci/ee college until I realized I would hate to do that job for xy years (also, I've failed all of my math/calculus courses). Worst two years of my life with shitload of frustrations, extreme boredom and just plain old lack of interest in courses.

Now I'm studying for medical school entry exams, everything is going just fine.

Fucked up high school, want to do something related to space as the cosmos in general.

But when I have nothing backing me up I'll probably go be a plumber or something. I'm simply too stupid to be a scientist of any sort and since it's already obvious I'll never excel in the field I'll have a horrible time finding work.

Fuck yeah community collage

Get a degree in mathematics and work on a mathematical foundation for robotics. This will allow engineers to create robots that move "naturally" and advances in AI will allow the robots to handle "complex tasks" (such as "give me the red ball", "Bring me my umbrella", "Go walk the dog", etc). What will happen after that is that most jobs done today by humans will be done by robots. The only nonrobotised jobs will be scientific ones. Soon the majority of the population will be employed to clean and repair the robots that work for the rich elite and scientific personnel. And later then a greater divide is made when AI will reach a peak where robots will maintain themselves thus causing the majority of the population to revert back to villages and medieval customs while a small elite will enjoy super-modern comforts and indefinite lifespan.

Enjoy the future guys.

I want to go to graduate school.

Will A's, B's and (a few C's) keep me out?
I have research experience. I am published in a peer reviewed journal and I think I can get solid recommendations.

I just don't see what the problem is if someone wants to study hard science or higher math independently.
