does anyone know of a good book or film that breaks down the historical development of science. i want like a timeline showing the evolution of science, like a history or science channel special or something? does anyone know of something like this?

1. go to library
2. go to catalogue
3. type in "history of science"
4. ???
5. france is bacon

Go to a bookstore or library. There are literally thousands of books on the subject, whether you're interested in Science in general, or if you're looking for something specific to a field, or if you want to go all the way back and look at priitive cultures and ancient philosophy.

If you're too lazy to peruse a local Borders, just search Amazon for a few minutes.

yeah i could do that, or a google search, or just read the first chapters of a highschool science text, but i was hoping for a nice recommendation from some friendly /sci/ guys

better suggestions anyone?

Cosmos by Carl Sagan might be what you're looking for. It focuses on physics and astronomy, though, so it doesn't have all of science.

oh yeah that's a good suggestion thanks for reminding me, i need to give it a watch. i wonder if a comprehensive history of science movie has ever been made

If you're into fizziks but don't like numbers or quantum mechanics, I'd suggest Atom: Journey Across the Subatomic Cosmos by Isaac Asimov.

>> No.2118941

download thought and reality by michael dummett and every time you read a chapter, do some wikipediaing or reading about the people in the book.
there are a lot of chapters on kuhn and his book "the structures of scientific revolutions" which you should read as well. he coined the word "paradigm" and really figured out what normal science should be (though as you'll read the idea of singular paradigms are better explained via competing programs)

studying the history and philosophy of science is incredibly important
