The two most violent centuries in recorded history are the 20th and 17th, with the World Wars (arguably non-religious) and the 30 Years War (definitely religious) respectively. Neither one were anywhere near as violent as prehistory.

Now, we know that the capacity to do violence increased by orders of magnitude this century, but the actual amount did not. So the propensity must have decreased by a similar amount, meaning we are actually far more peaceful than we used to be.

Aggressiveness towards outsiders and tool use during disputes would have been a great advantage to early human societies, I'd say it was pretty much inevitable that we'd go that path. I don't think its prevalence has much to do with religion. Of course weapons existed thousands of years before science, so I'm not sure what you're trying to get at with that question.

When people blame religions (and other social systems that encourage unquestioning obedience) for certain conflicts, it's because religious claims are used to justify and intensify them.
