As a biology major, I can affirm that this is correct. Pressure levels at the poles are why Polar Bears have taken on a white appearance; it has to do with the processes gene's undergo after breeding is focused long enough in a particular area.

Why do you think there are different species of humans, with different traits and strengths? People from the high up Himalayas, for example, have lost much of the "yellow" color you would associate with their race - and it happened only over a couple hundred years, so basically a handful of generations.

You understand Polar Bears eat mostly fish, and only rarely other mammals. They do eat other mammals of course, but polar bears don't carry about like a standard predator - they are much smarter than that.

Polar bears fur and skin color are due to thermoregulation and adaption to enviroment.
Theory suggests that, to adapt to the lightening of fur, skin pigment started to darken and fur started to become translucent, thus creating an effective way to gather heat from the sun and be adapted simultaneously.
Though it's debated which came first, but the consensus is that the fur was selected for both functions, to camouflage and pass the heat to the skin.
