Irishfag here.

Don't know what the story with greece was but in Ireland a crash was just waiting to happen. Idiotic right-wing government did whatever they could to keep up a clearly unsustainable level of economic growth.

Things were just getting ridiculous. Particularly property prices. In a way I'm glad the crash happened. Now, when I start working and want to settle down I actually stand a chance of being able to afford a house \o/.

However, afaik it seems the mistakes our government made weren't really any worse/more stupid than those made in the usa, i guess it was a case of timing and also the fact that usa can recover from such fuckups much better than we can (as it would take something pretty huge to destroy other countries' confidence in the states).

I guess the lesson is: just 'cause america can get away with things doesn't mean you can.

This isn't very /sci/ related btw...

Irish politics is a mess. At least in the US you have two parties which are diametrically opposed to each other (at least on paper). Here it's technically a multi-party system, but the two main opposing parties (without either of which a government has never been formed) are essentially the same. The other parties only ever form the minor part of a coalition government.
I wouldn't describe the current government as 'liberal'. The main party don't seem to have a driving ideology at all. They merely practice ad-hoc pragmatism and clientelism.

3 parties in ireland. labour party and 2 populist parties created out of a difference over whether or not to sign some oath to the british king or something 80 years ago (which as you might have guessed bears absolutely no relevance to today's situation-which is why you'll forgive my sketchiness on the details).

As you may have guessed, a populist party is free to change it's tune whenever it feels like it. Raising taxes can't clash with a party's principles if it doesn't really have any.

but it isn't

it's like an attractive place for investments etc

hard to explain to you moron, but think of tax shelters and booming/specialised economies -- they all have high external debt/gdp ration but not necessarily high national debt/gdp or household debt/gdp

> Ireland and greece's massive debt

Implying the two countries' situations are even remotely similar.

Ireland has more debt than is good for it.

Greece, OTOH, is unbelievably fucked up. Not just the levels of debt, but the population's unwillingness to face up to the situation. For most of the last decade, they've been living off credit. Now, not only has the credit dried up, but they have to pay off the outstanding debt to boot.

The situation for Ireland (and Portugal) isn't even remotely comparable. All that's happening there is that the lenders have sensed an opportunity. The current recession makes it harder for countries to avoid borrowing, which means that they can get away with charging more for credit. Even if the richer Eurozone countries undercut them, that will reduce the global credit supply which strengthens their hand.

It's not necessarily the kind of tourism people want. People who travel throughout Europe or come go to college here are usually ok, but many tourists who come purely for legalized drugs don't really know how to handle it. It's like kids that are finally allowed to drink alcohol... a lot of drugs related incidents are caused by tourists. It's the main reason we banned mushrooms too.

National debt doesn't have to be a sign of a failing economy. It can actually be a good thing.

tightening the belt in the conventional sense is not necessarily good in these situations

it shrinks the economy and makes it even harder, if not impossible, to repay the massive debt

a universal 10-20% wage cut overnight for everyone would help tremendously with competitiveness, but it's fucking hard to implement

Yes, but destroying your own industry is retarded.

To be honest, its only the fault of the tourists' home nations. And to be even honester, it is the home nation that gaurantees to pay medical expenses, so they're getting double fucked.

I don't understand how foreign debt is not a bad thing

>> No.2066322

Greece.

You're overlooking the issue of maturity, i.e. the period over which the debt must be repaid. Greece's debt has a median maturity of less than three years, which is why it's such a big problem.

For comparison, the UK's median debt maturity is 14 years, which is why the situation is nowhere near as bad as Cameron wants everyone to believe. He just wants an excuse to shrink the state, even if it means driving the economy into the ground.
