I would care if Khan Academy didn't exist. At my High School in Utah I had finished all the math classes offered after my sophomore year. After the final day of my Algebra II class I asked my math teacher: "Now what?" He told me if I was interested in learning more math he would see that it happens. For the rest of my High School career I had a private math/computer science class with him which was just me and him dicking around in math and computer science for 1.5 hours during the school day during his off period. Some days we would just leave campus and go sit in a cafe and talk about math and computer science over a cup of coffee. My last semester of High School I had accumulated enough credits to graduate early. However, I still showed up to learn from him even though I was not technically enrolled anymore.

I remember when I was in high school a couple of years ago. By the time I was a senior, I had finished nearly all of the advanced courses in my middle-of-nowhere school because I loaded up on them my previous years.

My final year, I was taking an AP English class and an AP Physics class. And that was it; I left after those two hours. I would have loved to have a teacher like yours back then.

The nearest college is the biggest joke of a community college. The private High School I go to has more prestigiousness than the "college". I don't say that out of zero personal experience, I took a Music Theory course for shits there last year and it was a joke. Besides, having a free period for intellectual conversations was more beneficial than any English/Economics class I've ever been in. Also, thanks to Bush's 'No Child Left Behind Act,' if one school in a district does poorly the entire district gets less funding for it, thus public schools opt to dumb down their curriculum in order to raise their test scores so they can get more funding, hence OPs post that US schools are cancelling certain math classes.

HEY FAGGOTS, PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT I HAVE TO SAY.

Highschools making more math classes less mandatory is a fucking good thing. I remember in my algebra 2 class (mandatory), half the class didn't care at all, 1/4 the class sucked at math, and 1/4 actually liked what they were doing. For the 3/4s of the class that didn't like the class, the class was useless for them. You aren't going to need algebra if you go into the majority of all fields. You're gonna need it to become an engineer tho, but how many fucking kids are gonna be engineers if they suck at math?

If some kid is going to VoTech for like automotive, electrician, construction, cooking, etc etc, Then they're actually doing something good and useful for humanity, theres no fucking need for them to take four years of english, three years of science. three years of math, and three years of history. Its fucking useless for them, and it only forces the schools to dumb down their classes because those kids suck/don't care.

School should only be mandatory until 8th grade, the completion of middle school. You can't drop out of school until your sophomore year (age 16). How fucktarded is that? It keeps trouble makers in school. It keeps retards who want to go into the working world in school.

Theres no fucking reason for this bullshit, highschool shouldn't be mandatory.

Not him but consider that math basically deals with quantifying and solving problems.
It is an essential part of critical thinking.
The more math people know the better they are at solving complex problems.
And I say complex very lightly.

In basic algebra we learn to basically solve for x.
If you understand the implication, you can see that the student is learning to find a solution to a problem given a set of restrictions.
In higher level algebra, we start addressing more complex problems where there may be multiple solutions that work or multiple components to a workable solution.

Geometry goes on to solve real world problems using the concepts established in Algebra. Trigonometry continues in complexity.
Calculus further addresses problems that may not be as easy to quantify as basic problems addressed in Algebra where the solutions may be varied and approximate. IE- there is no 100% right answer, but you can get close enough for practical purposes.

The point is, these problem solving skills take the intuition and guess work out of every day problems. They allow us to identify archetypes for problems, quantify the components, exclude irrelevant details, and find a solution that we know is right.
To say that math is not useful in everyday life is to say that you do not need to solve problems or you would rather guess and fail your way to a correct answer when you do.

The reason you think this is due to your lack of knowledge.
Try calculating compound interest over a 30 year loan is changes in rate every 5 years or the statistical probability of a change in a specific market area that the adjustable rate loan a bank is trying to give you is based on using only basic algebra.
I can tell you now, you need complex problem solving skills to even have a valid intuition about the usefulness of such a loan.

On top of that, what would your background tell you is the best way to buy a home?
Do you even know the long term impact of taking a loan versus saving the money?

Algebra IS basic math. Once you learn basic arithmetic algebra is the next step. Everyone just thinks there is this huge divide between basic arithmetic and algebra because schools spend 3 years trying to abstract algebra into dancing bears before they are ready to hit children with equations when in actuality the kids have been learning algebra the entire time just with a layer of cutsie abstraction on top of it.

Nah, I visited my old high school and he's still there teaching. I guess it's because he's ridiculously strict, so just a phone call home won't suffice. He will actually schedule a meeting between the student and their parents to discuss every last detail. Also, he's our school's success story because despite growing up as an obese kid (he's buff and alpha as fuck now) from a single mother with three kids in Chicago, he pulled himself together and got into Northwestern. He originally felt that he probably would've been just a garbageman because he was so rebellious that teachers hated him, but I guess that's why the punk students admire him enough to maintain a C.

Nope. It's the truth.

It's mostly because the GRE is a general test given to everyone from math majors to art majors, so they had to dumb it down. While you're somewhat correct, you're not entirely correct. Voting uses predetermined, preselected candidates and only those candidates will be voted into office. That being the case if you control which candidates are on the ballot you have power over and above any voter pool of any intellect.

The only thing a reasonably intellectual person can do when given two bad choices is to make it clear that neither choice is acceptable. Though that will not keep one of the bad choices from running amok for the duration of their term.

Im from Mexico too, and this is true, but only for private high schools. They are not as expensive as american private high schools, 1000USD a month for getting a level of education as good as Scandinavian System, and its very easy to get a scholarship. Its also mandatory in most private high schools to be proficient in a 2nd Language (usually English), but a lot of private elementary and middle schools, teach almost all their curriculum in english anyway. so when they get to high school, you need to be proficient in a 3rd language. Usually Chinese or German.
Also, its common that the teachers are from the US or europe. and the language teachers are native speakers.
Also, they offer you the option to study 1 year overseas in a certified high school. not in shittyvile UTAH

why are you guys scared of private education?

LOL Henry Eyring

seriously bro, you dont know shit about shit, so shut the fuck up.

Mexico has a major amount of mathematical physics (applied physics, not theoretical astrophysics, which is the most utterly worthless area of study known to mankind)...

also a major amount of research and industrial organic chemistry.

in the 1960s-1980s, many larger chemical companies began building facilities in mexico to capitalize on developments in the field of natural product chemistry (the isolation and use of chemicals obtained from natural sources).

one of the main, and most well known, examples was the discovery that certain species of Yams can be used as a natural source of Steroid precursors.

many large facilities were built by a few different companies to extract, refine, and utilize these precursors for the synthesis of steroidal derivatives.

this industrial development directly lead to major government and private investment in research universities in mexico.

currently mexico's is mostly known for its polymer and organic chemistry research
