NASA's Fermi Finds Giant, Previously Unseen Structure In Our Galaxy

>WASHINGTON -- NASA will hold a media teleconference at 2:30 p.m. EST on Tuesday, Nov. 9, to discuss a new discovery by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Gamma rays are the highest-energy form of light. The soon-to-be published findings include the discovery of enormous but previously unrecognized "gamma-ray bubbles" centered in the Milky Way.

Interesting, the conference was already held, today.

Gee, so there's something like 100,000 supernovas going off in the center of our galaxy? Not like there was ever anything before that would have suggested that. I mean, it's not like there's this enormous bright-as-fuck glob of light sitting in the middle of our galaxy.

>> No.2030135

It looks to me that these 'gamma-ray bubbles' are fairly directional and pointed away from the galaxy (normal to the plane of our galaxy, if you know what that means).

It's funny because a few years ago there was this big deal when we first discovered gamma ray bursts (unrelated phenomenon... probably) and we though they were spherical instead of directional, they would have to have had more energy than the mass that they contained (i.e. physics momentarily shit itself).

Seriously, google gamma ray bursts. It's a fun story.

the particles of matter are falling into the immense gravity fire (black hole) at the center of our galaxy so fast the impact is throwing particles out of the disc were in ,. i wonder if antimatter would be the culprit pushing itself away from the fire carrying particles with in its wake hmmmm??? i bet it's one hell of a storm at our core.

Wait, how can a black hole shoot off polar jets of anything when it's escape velocity is faster than the speed of light? Is it due to shit colliding at very high speeds as they rush toward the event horizon and releasing gamma rays in the process?
