The main reason is the lack of "purity" in engineering; engineers are just making stuff, they're not helping advance the science of the stuff.

Of course, this isn't always true... but generally it is.

An undergraduate degree in engineering puts you straight into industry and a masters is enough to put you in most research. To be taken seriously in Natural Sciences, you almost always need a PhD which entails 7 years (average) of graduate work and then (most likely) working yourself to death with the hope of achieving tenure by 40 (average). Seriously, natural sciences is more of a death march than medical. Engineering is mo' money, faster, easier, less bullshit, more professional respect. But I have the utmost respect for people who go into NatSci anyway knowing how much bullshit they'll have to put up with.

NatSci people play life on Hard Mode, so it makes sense they'd be bitter at us engineers who take the easy way out and apply knowledge to industry quickly and easily.

I think the basic concept is that scientists come up with the recipe for the cake, engineers make the cake. Or at least that's what a lot of people think. Personally, I see nothing wrong with making cake and stuffing your face with it, but whatever.

Don't listen to the Nat.Sci. philistines, they're in Grad School, that means they're already dead inside. Concern yourself with answering to a boss that pays you like a king and engaging in challenging work, rest assured that you are not doomed to subsist on grad student salaries or TA a bunch of whiney undergrads for a professor who could care less.

Not saying it doesn't pay of in the end (oh boy does it), but if you don't have the patience for it then you don't have the patience for it. Also keep in mind Grad School sucks out your soul and leaves you a shallow and embittered alcoholic husk of a man.

This may be a good thread to ask about this... I'll be completing a bachelor's degree in software engineering this next year, but have no idea what I'm going to do next, or where I'm going to go.

If anyone here has any experience in that area, would you suggest a Ph.D., or just M.S. (in computer science)? Also, what are some good schools, in your opinion, on the West coast? Sorry if I'm sabotaging your thread, OP.
