There will be a much larger stupid/working class and smaller, more elite, ultra powerful groups which need to go into hiding because of the implications of their control/natural job. Ultra elite social structures will be hidden from the general public and even from lower level elites.

High level elites will have their own followers and most likely, in the next 50 years, protective exoskelleton suits with high power that only million,billion, trillion, and quadrillionares (most likely money that isn't theirs directly but command) can afford.

I don't want everyone dead. I expect a fucking big jump of the average intelligence of people (like 130 or more). With that, new technologies to travel in space and expand our home in the solar system and beyond. I would have loved to be a space prospector or explorer. I should have born 100 years later.

a) The consumer-based economy model is insustainbable in the long-term. Humanity is restructured in a more spartan society where people with what they need and operate as much tech as they need. Tremendous leap in technology in order to increase productivity.

b) Consumer-based model is capable of sustaining mankind, we expand into the universe with eyes full of greed.Tremendous leap in technology in order to satisfy consumer demand.

a) FTL is possible, we cruise the galaxy and beyond.

b) FTL is impossible, we travel between the starts for years, decades, centuries. However centuries would be a neglectable period when you live hundreds of thousands of years (no aging). Probably sleeper ships.

3. Due to advances in robotics people no longer do manual work - robots clean, cook, build. Humans are designers, scientists, politicians, artists.

4. Over 90% recyclebility.

5. No pan-human empire/republic/federation/etc. Humans don't tick like that.

I don't see things as being as drastically different as some people think. Just look at past future predictions and how wrong they often are. I think the basics of life are going to remain essentially the same, with the addition of new gadgets and electronics.

Technology and knowledge can change a lot, people can't change very much. Someone from 5,000 years ago would say, "yep... people are still stupid and selfish". Technology isn't everything, or even most things.

1. Another cold war starts off, this time between China and America or China and Europe. It extends into space, various space related treaties are scrapped and nukes go into permanent orbit.

This could end in two ways:

a) Like the first Cold War, nothing happens.
b) The world's satellite network gets obliterated by space weapons in under 90 seconds, everybody fires their strategic weapons and the world enters an information dark age because the majority of our culture and technology is stored electronically.


2. Various technologies continue to improve, moores law eventually stops holding within 15 years from now. AI research starts to get government funding as the technology to make it a reality becomes possible. It will go down in a few possible ways:

a) Someone gets close to a breakthrough in Seed A.I. research, and other countries get scared and start a war to stop them from finishing it.
b) One country completes it in time, but it isn't friendly because they rushed it out the gate and it destroys our civilization or totally wipes us out.
c) One country completes it in time, it is friendly (to them) and they use it to take over the world.
d) Same as b, but with a corporation instead of a country.
e) same as c, but with a corporation instead of a country.
f) Nations cooperate on the A.I., we get a utopia.

In all options where the AI is completed, everything that will ever be discovered gets discovered within a year of completion.

Interesting, though I'm not familiar with the book, I found a 2 sentence synopsis, rofl. And I am a fan of the original, though I'm mostly partial to books 4-6 where shit just gets crazy. Crazy awesome that is. Reading those books in depth and comparing his insights with my daily experience has been shocking and life-changing. There is pure genius, and I've been fortunate enough to see a glimpse of it.

I recommend putting them at the top of your list. I've read them all three times now, finding something new every time, simply because his writing style is so subtle, he can hit you over the head and you don't even realize it. They get tougher to read, but isn't there some saying about tough nuts to crack or something? Anyway, they only get better and better.

His son's books are good for those who got part of the way through the series and gave up; I guess a lot of people stop at 3. I'm fairly sure he was just kind of cashing in on the name reference, how else do you explain nearly a dozen books in the last few years? They read kind of like fanfiction, and are pretty easy to swallow, but I'm fairly confident he butchered the hell out of Book 7 which Frank didn't get to write (read: died :(((( ) by making it two books which call back heavily to his own prequel series. They are fun reads, but I've been trying to forget all the plot development he shunted in, in order to keep Frank's original message clear.

No, there isn't any (Human-level) AI in this century, only in the next century they get something a little more advanced, so on and on, but cycling catastrophes (An Anticipation-Singularity-Futurism-Setback cycle) throws down civilization sometimes on the galactic scale so I don't have to deal with writing about post-singularity civilizations too much :)
