I'm literally being forced to learn calculus (collegefag) completely on my own, and there's shit I need to learn TONIGHT.

Basically I have to learn about
Implicit differentiation
Related Rates
Inverse functions (+trig)
Derivatives of ^

ANY HALP PLZ THNX

>> No.1897349

Oh and the "Derivatives of ^" was meant to point at the line above ~_~

All single variable? Shit's easy. Still not easy enough to be learned in one night.

Collegefag eh? I'm learning the same thing as a highschool fag.

You can't actually learn all that shit overnight unless you already have a firm grasp on calculus. I doubt you do because you haven't learned it yet.

Implicit differentiation is simple. You really do the same operation when you take the derivative of any function. You take the derivative of both sides and just write y as a derivative with respect to x.

let y = x^2 => y' = 2x

That's explicit differentiation because the function and derivative are explicitly stated.

let x^2 + y = x^3 => 2x+ y' = 3x^2

By taking the derivative of both sides you solve for y' implicitly. This is useful when y can't be algebraically separated from x.

Take the implicit derivative of this function
x = sin y

Congrats you just learned how to implicitly differentiate and the derivative of arcsin x.

you had more time OP, but you procrastinated all this time.

Now you get what you deserve.

>> No.1897420

OP, why the fuck are you paying all that money to a college that just hands you a list of topics and says "learn this on your own"? Tuition is supposed to be paid in exchange for education.

Either you're exaggerating, or your professor is an asshole and a master troll.

>I'm literally being forced to learn calculus (collegefag) completely on my own

why would this be the case?

also, you should definitely purchase a textbook.

Your doing that in college?? I'm still in grade school in Australia and did was taught that ages ago, did you do maths in high school?

Also, go to this link and make an account, although its written for an austrlian syllabus it is a really easy way to learn maths.

Youll want to look under that Extension mathematics 1 section

Believe it or not, this case IS true. Case in point: class started at 15 people, throughout the few weeks only 5 remain, but I HAVE to pass this class or my life is pretty fucked.

>> No.1897430

With related rates you are given functions that are related through derivatives and antiderivates.

You are given y and x values to plug in and solve for constants. It's easy if you work through a few examples. It's just a system of equations.

Just memorize the table of inverse trig derivatives. IIRC they can all be derived using implicit differentiation but you will use them so often that the derivation becomes almost pointless.

there's no way it's so bad that it can't even begin to teach you how to do something as simple as differentiation of inverse trig functions.

i don't mean to be rude here, but it doesn't sound like you're putting much effort into this. bad professsor or not, the onus is on you to learn the material.

khanacademy is your best bet. i'm not usually a huge fan but literally EVERYONE else i know loves it. if you're looking for a better textbook, the /sci/ e-text archive almost definitely has stewart essential calculus, which is the go-to text for university calc.

good luck.

I'm not OP, but I'll answer this anyway. This stuff is taught in high school, but I think it depends on the particular high school and on which classes you decide to take in high school. Not everyone took the same math courses in the same grade. For example, I took calculus as a senior, but my younger brother was in less-advanced math classes (probably due to lower grades in that subject) and probably didn't get past pre-calculus in high school. Fortunately, I don't think he needs calculus for whatever he's doing in college.

>> No.1897463

>>1897436

It's not a bad text. You probably just don't know how to read math.

Protip: It's read very slowly and you work through the given examples. If you don't understand something that isn't explained you look it up.

Ausfag here, i now vaguely recall that americans do maths as individual subjects right? like algebra, trig etc.

Over here its all in the one subject and we learn each one bit by bit. I like it better that way because its never boring

>> No.1897490

>>1897482

...what the fuck?

could you elaborate a bit? like, when you learned this material, what subjects was it sandwiched between?

i ask because i couldn't imagine doing calculus without knowing my trig/algebra inside and out, and if i follow you, it sounds like you're saying that's essentially what you do?

>> No.1897492

I'm not relying solely on other people to help me learn this :/

And as for the book, it's the worst put-together pile I've ever set eyes on.

i don't mean to come off like I'm not putting effort into this, I really am. But when the prof. teaches directly from a crap book it spirals easy things into complex ridiculousness.

At first we started with just trig and algebra in grade 7, but most classes start calculus in grade 11 if they dont accelerate. My class finished all calculus (We did up to projectiles, simple harmonic motion, inverse trig and that sort of stuff) before we finished probability and binomial theorem. It might sound like its bad but it actually all goes together very sequentially.

>> No.1897517

>>1897490
I'm not him, but it's the same in my country. All we have is "math" as a single subject. What you actually see in each year changes, but yeah, you see trig/algebra first and then calculus. Senior year math was pretty much all of calc 1 for me.

I bet it's possible, if the kids study hard and are taught properly, but it's hard to get that far in math so quickly without speeding through it, so they'd have to be re-taught the complicated shit when they get to college. In any case, it will never happen here, because schools in the United States like to go at a pace that everyone can handle, because the schools themselves are seen as inadequate if too many stupid kids flunk out. All public schools really care about are achieving a 100% graduation rate and getting high average standardized test scores. That's why any living person who shows up to class is given a diploma. Pretty soon, the same thing will happen to bachelor's degrees that aren't from a fucking Ivy league university, and you fuckers will have to get a master's degree just to work at fucking K-Mart.

>> No.1897557

that's interesting. in america you can start taking calculus in 11th grade, but most students who do take calculus do so in their senior year. the AB version of the course covers up to applications of integration, and the BC version of the course covers up to, i think, sequences and series. basically AB is calc 1 plus some shit and BC is calc 2 minus some other shit.

i've always felt the american version of learning math is pretty natural, hadn't even considered that it'd be done so differently elsewhere.

the more you know, etc.
