Confirmation bias will ensure that this stuff gets interpreted as what the profecy predicted.

I remember turning on the radio one night, and John Safran/Father Bob were intervieinwg some author who was like a try-hard version of Dan Brown (which is pretty sad in and of itself) who wrote thrillers about various doomsday theories.
Apparently the 'science' behind the 2012 thing is that the Mayans had calculated a point in time where a bunch of celestial bodies were going to align, and that recently NASA had been able to confirm this.
Apparently that this was, in turn, going to cause the planet's poles to flip or whatever, so North would be South and vice-versa. They then went on to discuss that Earth was actually 'long overdue' for such an event.

I know absolutely nothing about geography or astronomy (the entire reason I'm here is because I misclicked onto the wrong board), so I really can't say whether this theory is just sensationalism or a plausible scientific fact, but it did keep me awake for a few hours that night.

Yes OP, a lot of cultists will commit suicide, a lot of survivalists will hide out in their bunkers, and a shit load of panicky, paranoid retards worldwide will run out to walmart to stock up on bottled water and canned beets.

A massive tsunami, a massive earthquake, a massive volcanic eruption at many large volcanic sites, a massive hurricane, a massive drought, a massive population burst that runs the entire world out of food, a massive epidemic that kills hundreds of millions of people (because AIDS and cancer don't count), and my personal favorite massive expulsion of radiation from the Sun that knocks satellites out of orbit and ends cellphones and cable TV as we know it. Don't trust ANY doomsday theory and just take life as it comes.
