Anyone here teach science at a high school level in the states?

How do you become a teacher with a B.S in a science discipline?

There's tests and certifications that let anyone with a BS teach without doing education major.
Most of the time, you'll just be a substitute teacher though, bro.

>> No.1869055

depends on the state you live in. in alabama, that's probably enough.

in a state that isn't a shithole, either get a masters degree in what you want to teach, or get into a credential program

yes.

Why is that? Lousy job market-or my background?

>> No.1869141

>>1869090

Because they'd rather give the job to a person with an education background plus a degree in the field rather than someone who has a degree in the field who took a crappy course and will probably become a crappy teacher.

I teach math, but I'm qualified in my state to teach physics. Most states just require some kind of bachelors degree and a certain amount of hours in subjects related to what you want to teach.

A masters or a degree in what you actually want to teach is nice, but not as good as being an outgoing person genuinely interested in education. I beat out a guy with my education to me because he was an assburgers weirdo only applying because he couldn't find a job anywhere else.

I can understand elementary education preferring a teaching degree but who the fuck gets two B.S degrees to teach high school? A few bio or chem classes alongside your teaching major is going to result in a lousy teacher who is unfamiliar with the content he/she is teaching.

>> No.1869200

Well, you can get started by doing Teach for America. It's a two year gig and the benefits are incredible (loan forbearance and they pay your interest, $10000 bonus, $30-50k per year salary, health insurance, dental, etc.) considering that you only need a BA/BS in any subject to apply. Normally the program is extremely competitive but if your degree is in science or math it becomes a cake-walk to get in apparently since they're in desperate need of science and math teachers. And by "cake-walk" I not only mean that the standards needed to get in go way down, but they even let you bypass a large chunk of the application.

The downside is that TFA only puts you in (and these are their words) "the worst schools in the country". So expect to have to teach in a Queens, NYC public high school or something along those lines.

The great news is that just about every state is in desperate need of science teachers so it's easy to get in and your pay is higher. I've heard of school districts that don't even require you have a degree yet as long as you can prove you're working on one.

>> No.1869220

Get a degree in the field you wish to teach and follow it up with a teaching certificate, which almost always requires graduate school.

hmmm I'll look into this. Thanks!

I'm actually a fan of the big-breasted hags. Yukari is my favorite. Cirno is only my mascot because she is a math genius.
