Case in point: "Corn Sugar."

HCFS != Corn Syrup != Table Sugar. They vary most significantly in the relative concentrations of fructose and glucose, and fructose is the shit that is terrible for your body. These commercials are blatantly lying to anyone dumb enough to believe them, and it's utterly sickening.

Shortly afterward there was a commercial on from the "citizens against beverage tax" or some bullshit. Ther presented an average looking woman railing on about how congress shouldn't be legislating a tax on beverages "such as sodas, juices, and sports drinks." Oddly enough, everything that was listed is commonly loaded with HCFS in this country. Listening to this commercial going on in the background made me stop for a moment and pity anyone foolish enough to take things like this at face value.

the HFCS 55 is 55% fructose, 45% glucose which is close enough to exactly the same as table sugar.

regular corn syrup has almost no fructose at all, but it is never used for some reason.

Both of them are terrible for you in large amounts, but it's not "close enough to exactly the same." Sucrose metabolizes into 5% more glucose and 5% less fructose; and fructose is what your liver metabolizes into some fairly nasty shit. Both are terrible for you in large amounts, but HFCS is marginally worse.
