Well /sci/, I'm in a predicament. It's been so long since the 6th grade, and I'm now a senior in high school now (yup, highschool fag).

Back then, I was so idealistic. I had this image of me as a great mathematician or physicist discovering the inner secrets of our universe. I had no concepts of the real world, only the pursuit knowledge. Now, I'm a cynical 4chan fag.

So this is my problem: do I follow my dreams and study what I love, being brokeass doing so, or do I become another godless fucking engineer doing it for the money?

(Note: No trolling on the engineers. You guys are great, but I research more than application.)

Engineering may be people taking scientist's hard research and applying it, but remember it's more of a PROCESS, not a discipline. Scientists/mathematicians have as much value in an engineering process as a regular engineer. My field may not be as applied as a civil or mechanical, but it's better because it's a combined field of research and application.

Unless you want to study something that has no application (theoretical physics lol) then you should work with applications NOW and put off that fun stuff towards the future when the economy can actually support it or put it to use.

Study what you love OP. All Sciences pay a good amount of money. You can actually get Rich off science, if you are really really good at it (which you can be if you love what your doing).

Engineering is shit tier, it pays less and less, and the market is constantly flooded with applicants. There are constant layoffs in engineering, especially in the current economy. In the US the current plan is to eliminate all engineering 4 year degree plans anyway, in favor of certification programs. The "degree" will pretty much be worthless in about 20 years.

Mechatronic Engineer here. After working on biomimetic brain interfaces and machine learning operators for several years I'm now doing very abstract cybernetic theory for my Phd program.

I worked for 7 years in field. The pay was quite good, but more importantly the work was always challenging and exciting.

The problem I always had with pure sciences is that anyone with a sufficient math background and sufficient interest can pursue them independently. But you can't apply most of that knowledge unless you have access to advanced engineering facilities... I stay up to date on most of the research being done in cognitive science, computer science, machine learning, nanophyics, biogenetics, etc...

You can always satisfy your theoretical appetite much easier than you can satisfy your engineering appetite. When you actually want to DO science or CREATE something, it's a whole different problem.

Third it's pure bullcrap to assume that YOU will be one of the chosen few scientists who are hired to work in one of these places.

Not only are you competing with every scientist in the world for a place but the people you are competing against have far more motivation than most westerners. There is a good fucking reason most high level research science jobs go to Asians these days.
