Pencil is fairly waterproof and not as expensive as a pigma pen.
I'm an ecology major.

Enough said (except I still use pen sometimes even though I shouldn't).

(NOTE: You can also get waterproof paper, but, again, it's expensive. Still, it would be nice to have sometimes.)

Pen is easier to use, meaning I can get more science done in the same amount of time. Also, pen makes it harder to go back and fake your results.
