In academic research, developed a method to carry out a certain type of measurement in a way that absolutely mogs any previous work. Basically acquiring the data sets I'm acquiring was not practically possible; either the sensitivity, bandwidth or measurement time would be multiple orders of magnitude worse with previous methods.

In industrial research, what I'm currently doing isn't very novel and I'm just designing a measurement setup which is unassuming at the face of it but the specs are so ambitious that it is non-trivial. Because of this the engineers initially designing it were extremely off in their approach, dug themselves into a nice hole and what was supposed to be a gentle introductory participation in a project ended up with me taking the whole thing over. It's not really what I want to be doing but here we are.
